I'm just messin'. I know what you mean, though I'm enjoying all the songs and think this will be a fun summer album.
Like it or not, Portugal has always dwelt on the pop side of the rock spectrum. The Satanic Satanist was made because John was listening non-stop to the Beatles. Love this band. Love the songs. I'm going to follow them on their Fall tour a bit on the West Coast hopefully for a week if I can get the time off. I've never done anything like that and I want to visit places in Washington and Oregon anyways so this is as good an excuse as any.
Lol i know youre joking, but I don't think they did it for exposure, I understand they had inspiration and a direction they wanted to go, it just so happens that direction is a popular sound and more simple and laid back.
Theye always had a little pop in them, no issue with that. The new songs are just really simple and basic in my opinion. That's really my problem. They're good, I just expected more.
I usually can't stand when bands strip it back but I've enjoyed the Portugal evolution. Especially in their live show.
"Tidal Wave" too. They definitely went full indie pop-rock here and it's hitting the spot for me. Not sure how this will stack up in their discography after only one listen, but will definitely be jamming this all summer.
I'm waiting until tonight so I can listen with all my friends at the listening party I'm having at my house. Pray for me.
Easily my least favorite PTM album. Give me Doomin+Gloomin or give me death lol The album is ok, I just expected more, so I am disappointed. Easy Tiger originally had this great horn section after the chorus, and it seems to have been removed to just repeat the same beat over and over. Lots of real basic structures, repetition, and lyrics that are not bad but just aren't great or memorable. Woodstock wasn't a great name for this album as I really cant see any relation, should've been called Coachella lol. That in itself isnt a big deal, but John says seeing his dads Woodstock ticket prompted him to scrap D+G, and create Woodstock, so I guess I expected some influences from that era, or artists from the festival. I dont get it I guess. Maybe it'll grow on me, but this and Humanz have both been somewhat of a let down. My least favorite albums by 2 of my favorite bands in the same year. EDIT: I also thought I might like Feel It Still in the context of the album, but in my opinion it feels out of place, and doesnt fit at all, and it is definitely the weakest song on the album. I havent really cared for it much since it was released though, so I will probably just continue to skip it.
I dunno, I guess I just have a bad taste in my mouth because of all the back and forth when it came to releasing this album. And then when the album finally comes out, a year later, it just isnt that great. They never had issues releasing an album every year, they couldve just released Doomin + Gloomin when they finished it, and then focused on Woodstock, instead of throwing that album away and taking more time to record again. And the reasoning behind the whole thing revolves around that Woodstock ticket, and I just dont really get what that has to do with anything as this album doesnt seem to have any Woodstock influences aside from Number One. PTM, and every other band, have every right to release the music they want to. But when you tease your fans with clips, tell them an album is done, only to turn around and scrap that album and release something different, you cant expect everyone to be on board with that and fans have every right to be kinda turned off by it.
I've given the album 4 spins already and I am already kinda over it. Just like Humanz. Glad others like it though.
After one full listen I like it more than I thought it would. I have a feeling it's going to grow on me a lot though.
Obviously pretty different for them, but it's a very good album. Really hope they blow up with this one.
Just finished my first listen and it's good but not great. I feel like the guys overthought Doomin+Gloomin which was probably just as good as Woodstock (but maybe even better) and probably more complete as a whole. This record has a lot of jams but it feels half-baked and very short. The record peaks with "Tidal Wave" and then just ends with "Noise Pollution" (a track I love when first released but it shouldn't be a closer..). Overall, this doesn't touch the masterpiece Evil Friends still is IMO. My favorite tracks are: "Number One", "Easy Tiger", "Rich Friends", and "Tidal Wave".
Found the first couple tracks to be pretty underwhelming but loved everything from Rich Friends on. And Noise Pollution works surprisingly well as the closer.
