BTW the song they have on the Nobody But You soundtrack is great. Why is that not included on the album?
Oooo listening now. The man himself posted it in their discord. Let’s go lol nvm. It seems everyone there uses some variant of his rallier name. Wtf
A note from John Gourley to all good people of Portugal. The Man Today we’re bringing a new album into the world. It’s called SHISH, and mostly I’m writing to send gratitude to my creative collaborators and to all of you, my creative enablers. Ok but what’s SHISH all about, John? What do you want to say about the record? That’s been the #1 FAQ around here for weeks. And the only answer I want to give, honestly, is: You can FAQ all the way off! Still it might be cool for you to know a couple of things… 2018. We won a Grammy. It was nice! (Strange.) Everyone told us to prepare a speech—a list of industry people we couldn’t afford not to thank. So we did. But what we wrote didn’t sit right with me. So in the car to the ceremony, I scribbled something different–the little speech Zach wound up reading on stage. (I’m shy.) See, I didn’t thank the industry for making our music possible. I wanted to thank rural Alaska for that. I guess I was realizing that, in a world that incentivizes rootlessness—that wants us to assimilate, homogenize and change—keeping a meaningful connection to your home, like I’ve always felt, is an act of both defiance and love. My parents were sled-dog mushers, and they raised me on a homestead far away from everything: three-plus hours to get to a store. But it was on all those long rides—in that beat up, rusted-out Ford F350, with a mediocre radio—that I’d hear the most music. That’s when music first made me want to make music. I’ve moved through lots of different worlds since then and never had a problem reshaping parts of myself to meld with collaborators and mentors who were forged by different kinds of fires. But you know how some people have to wander in the wilderness before they can come home? Eventually I realized my home is the wilderness and wandering is just what I do. So SHISH is me honoring that kid in the truck and honoring the landscape that reared him. It’s me working with artists I’ve known forever, and who understand the kind of self-sufficiency and isolation I’m talking about. Kane, Nick, Zoe, Dani. I asked them to ride in the truck with me, and they hopped in. The music’s yours now. I hope it brings you home, too. John
Immediate first thoughts after finishing a listen at midnight - wow. This is one of their most cohesive albums start to finish. I never thought we’d ever hear anything resembling pre IMTIC era ever again. Musically, this is an incredibly interesting listen with melody switchups, a little bit of early PTM math-rock time signature stuff going on - I am just utterly shocked to be honest. PTM has always been one of my favorite bands and I would ride or die with them til the end and wished them the success that came after Feel It Still, but to hear stuff like this is just an unexpected treat.
This is the best PTM album since 'Evil Friends' for me. I didn't think they had this in them after the most recent efforts but it really feels like there's a correlation between leaving major label and a more 'return to roots' encapsulating all sound of this. The whiplash from 'Denali' to 'Pittman Ralliers' is so unexpected and really sets the tone. I'll give this a lot of listens.
This is awesome. As mentioned, Pittman Ralliers is a harsh left turn but I love it. Also wow at Knik! Truly takes me back to old school PtM
They're back y'all. I'm so happy. Fuck yes. Evil Friends is one of my favorite albums ever and this gives me the same feeling.
I just saw their current tour is being billed as a throwback to the old shows where they did jams and alternate versions of songs. Those were my favorite shows of all time, wish I could go to one of these shows but nothing in AZ.
Holy shit Apple Music finally posted the credits and Pittman Ralliers is sung by David Marion of Fear Before the March of Flames!!! I knew he sounded familiar just couldn’t place it!
You know what's crazy? This album comes out almost 22 years to the day that Anatomy of a Ghost released their one and only full-length.
