Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Celine Sciamma, 2020) Movie

Hyped.

 

Crazy that this is the same woman who did Water Lillies and Tomboy.

 

This is the favorite for the Palme so far, yeah?

 

I’m thinking if Hollywood is even okay it’ll get the Palme, but I think this is a shoo in for the Grand Prix.

This got bumped to February which sucks but makes sense, but THIS JUST LEAKED.

 

OH SHIT

 

The last two minutes of this movie is one of the most stunning things I’ve seen on screen in about twenty-five years of watching movies. My god.

 

This fucking ruled. Once you get used to the slow burn, it’s magical. The way it builds the tension and never gets male gaze-y with the love scenes is phenomenal. The ending is a wallop.

This just leapt into my top 10 of the year. I loved the script, the leads, the score. I found it very moving.

 

Do you think Sciamma makes a big leap here cast/budget wise, or does she stick with the level of something like this? She’ll definitely have offers.

It comes out on Valentine's Day.

 

I’m not in one of the markets where it’s opening this week but apparently Neon gave approval to a theater in Jacksonville to have one showing on Valentine’s Day until the full wide release so my girlfriend and I are going to try to go!!

It’s getting a sneak preview here tomorrow. Already seen it twice but seeing it with a sold out audience in an old historic Portland theater is gonna be something else. Ready to cry.

Nothing in Richmond at all and I’m losing it. Can’t go to the preview in Charlottesville tonight but at least it will have more showings there eventually.

 

Austin was supposed to get this on the 14th but it’s not on the drafthouse schedule at all, bummer.
