  1. Seaside is small, but it's nice to walk around. We went to a little breakfast spot there called Chalkboard Cafe that was pretty good. I have yet to visit the other coastal towns.

Having dinner downtown tomorrow which hasn't really been my stomping grounds for like 10 years so IDK where to go.

What restaurants are we eating at these days? Doesn't have to be downtown I'm just curious. Feel like I haven't tried something different and delicious in a long time.

I haven’t tried anywhere new in a while, but places I pretty much always want to go: Nong’s, Cubo, Kim Jong Grillin, Stretch the Noodle, Oma’s Hideaway, Proud Mary (for cold brew, I haven’t had their food but it looks good)

edit: The last place I actually went was to Basalisk because their chicken sandwiches are so good

  6. Damn I was literally at Basilisk like 10 minutes ago haha. Though really just Paydirt since Basilisk was obv closed at this hour. That place does have a great chicken sandwich though

Does anyone want 2 tickets to Mae & The Spill Canvas next Tuesday at Polaris Hall? I've got a bike race and won't make it.

  8. Signal boosting for anyone who may need it or knows someone that might

edit: dunno what’s up with the embed. Heretic Coffee over on 28th is offering free breakfast every day starting 11/1 to anyone losing SNAP. Just go in and ask for the Snap Breakfast and they’ll hook it up

  10. Hell yeah thank you, was thinking I’d just go in and buy some stuff but that is much more effective

It's going to be such a nightmare. First and foremost the folks who rely on snap to survive. But they're encouraging us to do de-escalation training because they anticipate lots of angry people coming to our office or calling our offices and social service workers are already so overwhelmed and overextended. Our budgets are non-existent. I'm lucky enough not to rely on benefits to survive but I work directly with those who do and we can't even help supplement with other resources because we have none.

  13. Dunno if anyone else here likes Break Bread (aside from Jason, who is the only reason I know they exist), but the owners are leaving Oregon and will be closing the business in March unless they can find someone to take it off their hands. Hoping someone steps up, but might wanna go eat there while you still can just in case!

Aw man it's a convenient lunch spot when I have to be at the courthouse.

Also this weather lately is miserable. It's so sunny but so windy and cold. I hate the wind. I will take any weather over wind. Die wind die.

That's a bummer to see about Break Bread. I really liked that place when I visited.

Dunno where you’re staying or what type of stuff you’re into, but I typed up a bunch for another visitor recently so here’s this! Sorry if it’s too much, they’re gonna be here for like a week so I threw a lot at them lol. Wanna make sure you have options for wherever you happen to be. Most of it is east side stuff, but not all. And obv be sure to check business hours/days

    Food:
Guero has really great tortas - it’s a must visit whenever I’m showing someone around town and it hasn’t missed yet

Pizza is always gonna be a little contentious lol, most people I know have different favorites. A few spots that haven’t failed me are Vincenzo’s, Ranch, Baby Doll, Scottie’s, and Wild Child (indoor seating at NW location only). If you’re looking for something ~different~, snag a pie from Curry Fusion (indian food meets pizza - not a great hangout spot though), or Dove Vivi (their crust is made from cornmeal)

As mentioned, Break Bread is solid. Other sandwiches or banh mi to look into if BB is randomly closed or doesn’t seem like the vibe would be Tanaka, Lardo, Luc Lac, Hello, or Sammich

It sounds like you have breakfast locked down with Pine State, but Screen Door is also the jam for a breakfast/brunch joint. Little Griddle and Dockside are solid too.

Eem is an excellent thai bbq fusion spot. Brisket fried rice/curry, stuff like that

Harlow is the move if you or anyone you’re with happen to be vegan

Papi Chulos has the best birria tacos around imo

    I like Kinboshi for ramen

I don’t have a great sushi rec, but there’s a very casual spot called Rollin Fresh that’ll serve you up a solid sushi burrito

Grassa if you want a casual pasta spot, Gabbiano’s if you want some remarkable Italian and are cool with getting spendy (might be a wait so call ahead to see)

Will also be on the pricier side, but Canard is always a wonderful dining experience. Their sliders in particular are melt in your mouth good. If this appeals to you, call first to make sure they’re not booked out on reservations

Mikiko is a good spot if you want to try a unique donut. They’re made from mochi and have a really (imo) satisfying consistency. Their instagram should show you what the Feb menu is looking like when the month starts

If you’re looking for a Portland food truck pod experience, some popular ones are Asylum, The Heist, and Midtown Beer Garden. The Heist in particular is not in the most convenient area, but has Bake On The Run and Frybaby, which are two of the best food trucks in town

    Drinks:
If you’re more of a no-frills type of person and just want a casual place to throw back a few, try Moonshot, Low Brow, Binks, The Pharmacy, Cat’s Paw, Sad Valley, Vendetta, or Bar Bar. Named a lot there, but they’re all in different areas and each will put you in a good spot to hop around a little bit if you’re feeling like it.

If the weather permits (it has been surprisingly sunny this month), give Revolution Hall a call and ask if their rooftop is open. If Rev doesn’t answer, try calling Show Bar, which inside of Rev Hall. It’s an old high school turned bar/music venue, and on a nice day will give you a beautful view of the city to pair with a drink

If you are into wine, Division Wines and Enso are both really cute, mellow spots

Pacific Standard and Box Social are good choices if cocktails are more the vibe. Collector is also very hip but that may come with a longer drink line

Keys Lounge gets a little crowded, but it’s a cool little place that has live jazz on Tuesday and Saturday nights

Pope House Bourbon Lounge is a neat little bar inside of an old Victorian home. Certainly not just bourbon, don’t let that scare you if bourbon’s not your thing

If bourbon (or other spirits) IS your thing, you may want to look ahead of time into booking a rez at the Multnomah Whiskey Library. It’s pricey, but is a really neat place and worth the experience if you’re into fine drinking (a term I feel is implied by the existence of fine dining)

Since you mentioned Deschutes, some other breweries worth checking out would be Migration, Grand Fir, Breakside, and Great Notion. That last one is primarily sours (and they have amazing bbq tacos)

    Outdoors:
You mentioned hiking, so weather permitting, you may enjoy walking around Forest Park (wildwood trail is pretty good), or Mt. Tabor. Both are relatively non laborious spots that are in Portland proper, if you’re simply just looking to be outdoors without traveling too far. Laurelhurst Park is a pretty place to walk as well.

If you’re trying to head out of town for a hike, I always recommend the Wahclella Falls Trail. It’s about 40 minutes out of town, and is maybe 1-1.5 hrs total hiking time. There is a big waterfall at the turnaround point.

Multnomah Falls is also out that way, but there’s not much to do there that I know of except for stare at an enormous waterfall. Would be remiss not to mention it though, as it is a tourist staple

Maybe a bit of a cornball recommendation, but the zoo here is probably my favorite that I’ve been to

    ——————

    Other stuff:
Heart and Prince are both popular coffee spots. Less & More is good too, but not the choice if you’re looking to sit

If you like vintage shopping and want to add to your luggage for the flight home, some worthwhile shops around town are Northwest Union, House of Vintage, and Hollywood Vintage

Powell’s (NW location) is a pretty iconic bookstore

Music Millenium is my fav record store in town, cozy place with a huge selection

Look up the Shanghai Tunnels Tour. I have never done it so can’t personally vouch, but I’ve heard it’s cool and comes with a beer tasting. If you do this, try to book one of the earlier tours because this area admittedly gets a little sketch at night lol

If you read this all and aren’t feeling inspired, look up @michelevenlee on Instagram. She is good about highlighting special events every Fri-Sun around the city
