I waited till midnight to listen to this. Easy AOTY unless Origami Angel beats it. I thought I would overplay the singles, but they flow great with the context of the album. My only complaint is the spoken word parts on Year of the Cup. I’m not usually a fan of slower tracks, but Easier to Love and Everything to Me are beautifully written and I love his vocals on them. Mona Lisa is a BANGER.
First listen down and Easier to Love You has fucking destroyed me. I've been feeling like shit for weeks and-- goddamn. That set me off, Get Your Wish callback in the closer also set me off. Fucking hell this is great.
After 2.5 listens I’m vibing with everything but the cup song. I wonder how expensive that lil Wayne interview sample was
I think “ain’t no happiness” is my favorite non single, so far edit: whoops that’s not what it’s called
Finally getting to listen to this and "Cheerleader" is still just so damn good. It might end up being my favourite of his.
thoroughly enjoyed my first listen to this, but my immediate reaction is that it's a much more lighthearted album than Nurture. not a bad thing, but just comparing the two, it doesn't even come close IMO.
I really love the last two songs. Overall it's a great record and it'll take me a lot of listens before I know how it stacks up against Nurture.
I really enjoyed my initial listen… but I think it’s totally fair to say that it just isn’t in the same league as Nurture. And I hate to say that too, it’s not to downplay this album at all… these are enjoyable songs. But man, he was SAYING SOMETHING with Nurture… and that’s just all there is to it, IMO. It’s hard to top an album like that, and I don’t even think Porter was trying to here, per se… and that’s totally fine.
Nurture never really did anything for me when it came out but I also haven’t revisited it since. This one was immediately more enjoyable for me on first listen
he did describe he wanted this album to be a non stop party so its definitely a different feel than nuture for sure. i mean he nailed the party vibe with cheerleader.. this is the post he talks about his vision for the new record porter robinson on Instagram: "MY THIRD ALBUM “SMILE! :D” is coming out JULY 26th!! the album that I was TRYING to write was this nonstop party — NO sincerity, ALL fun, an album that revels in absurdity for a world that rejects context. And that was the plan until I accidentally started confessing how I was really feeling, and … you’ll hear the rest. my most fun, and maybe my most heartbreaking album i think it’s my most interesting work and I’m dying for you to hear it ON JULY 26thhhh"
Was pretty disappointed by this on my first listen, but that was due in part to expecting a consistently big, bright, super-high energy album when Cheerleader turned out to be a a huge outlier in that regard. Album is way more enjoyable the second time around knowing now what to expect. That said, it doesn't touch Nurture. That was almost certainly a once-in-a-lifetime album for me, so as far as follow-ups go, this is still disappointing through no real fault of its own. Still enjoying it though.
This was never going to touch Nurture but most albums don’t. This is still a super solid second place and it has some of his best songs ever. Gonna play it a ton this year!
I'll echo that my first listen while enjoyable threw me off a little because I was expecting more Cheerleader/Knock Yourself Out songs (which in hindsight was a little silly because Russian Roulette was already out and that's different from those two) but after going in for second and third listens, clicked way way more and I love it. Love the emo singer-songwriter approach but with electronic flourishes, love how positive and love themed the album is, so much fun all around.
I do think the album is great but it doesn't hit me the same way Nurture did. A lot of that comes down to the timing of the release and where my headspace is, though. Like, I was dealing with very severe depression when Nurture came out so I found it therapeutic. But now I'm in a much better headspace for the most part so Smile isn't tingling my sensitivities the same way. Regardless, it's still really, really good
