This song absolutely rocketed into the world, setting records and shit. Pretty crazy. Song is fine enough, very Julia Michaels-y plus the generic indie voice. Produced by Dan Nigro (As Tall As Lions) who is on a roll these days. Plus she's on the High School Musical show, and Taylor Swift gave her a shout out. A perfect storm that made 2021's first viral hit
Yeah, I don't get the huge hype for this, other than it just being a perfect storm. It sounds like something Julia Michaels, Sasha Sloan or Holly Humberstone could release and would get minimal attention. It's fine, but I don't get the huge viral sensation I got when hearing something like "Royals" or "Call Me Maybe."
I don't get it either lol. Her voice isn't really unique or interesting and I didn't find the song particularly catchy so I don't see myself replaying it. That said, it is really well executed and I can totally see the Taylor Swift and Lorde comparisons people have been making. I heard she apparently owns the master too so I'm really interested to see where her career goes.
Agree x2. I think the song is pleasant and fine, but if it was released by an unknown, versus her specifically, it wouldn't be the same BOOM
Yeah I am pretty sure the subject matter and who it's about is a large part of why it went viral. It's what I kept seeing on tiktok and I just had to have a "youths!" Moment
I was thinking the same thing. It just goes to show you how much luck plays into a smash song. Someone like Holly Humberstone who makes similar music can release a song just as good, if not better, than Olivia’s song and get a minuscule amount of the recognition Olivia got. This isn’t meant to take away what Olivia has done, it just is an example of how luck and perhaps the right timing come into play when someone breaks out from a hit song.
I actually think it’s pretty darn strong for a first single. I really like the production on it, that’s probably my favorite part. How the car starting segues into the piano intro, the bassy synths that bend down in the verses. I mean, it’s certainly very much teenage angst, but I really like it sonically.
Her co-star on High School Musical Joshua just released his debut song today. He had to be rushed to the ER today though and they don't know what's wrong with him. Pretty crazy.
Well that's wild, I don't understand anything that's happening or who he is.... But I really hope he's ok
Did not realize that Olivia Rodrigo was the girl from the high school musical series. It all makes a lot more sense to me now where she came from.
That Olivia Rodrigo song is definitely elevated by the production I’ll say that. Dan Nigro is the co-writer and producer!! I’m so so happy for him.
Listening to Wonder by Shawn Mendes again (the album) and I wish some of the songs were better because songs like Wonder and Dream are great IMHO. Sucks the record falls largely flat. I think he has a great voice when utilized correctly.
I never even gave the album a listen, I like his singles enough but I'm just not enticed enough for a full album listen
It’s not worth your time. Also every song being about Camila (so he says Shawn Mendes Says Every Song He’s Written is About Camila Cabello) does not help. We get it you love her a lot, can’t you write about something else?
I think the production on that album is pretty interesting at times, but yeah the lyrics are so painfully bland throughout that it really holds it back.
While I do loved him and Camilla together because they're both very happy, it doesn't seem to produce compelling music from him haha. He should take a note from Taylor and try writing about people and experiences that aren't his own
