halsey fucking sucks her response on twitter is weak as hell and doesnt even address why she randomly brought up iggy. but mariahcareyidontknowher.gif @quavo is weak
I don't get where the criticism of Halsey is coming from. Idk why she chose to publicly disparage Iggy but it's nothing Twitter hasn't been saying since Iggy's 15 minutes ended. Also I think Halsey is absolutely right in her criticism of Katy and Demi and it's disturbing to me how dismissive pop is of sapphic relationships, like Strangers is pretty much the first mainstream pop song about wlw that was actually created by an LGBT woman and I don't see why Halsey is wrong for pointing that out. Katy and Demi deserve to be called out for profiting off the sexualization of women loving women when they're not gay and don't experience the harm that trivializing women's relationships does.
i mean its kind of funny she calls out iggy for disregarding black culture when she pretty much admits she used quavo as a prop
It's because she deflected from the criticisms of Quavo by randomly bringing up Iggy instead. And IDK how to feel about the comments about Demi. Like didn't Demi actually say she wrote from experience there? Is Demi Lovato Bisexual? Watch for Her Answer! She was being passive and not direct, but I dunno. I don't feel as confident commenting about Demi RE: this in comparison to Katy. I understand why people have issues with the lyrics, and I am not defending Demi's tweet, lol
straight identifying people exploring their sexuality and realizing they're straight after doing so is a. a thing that happens and b. perfectly fine
To phrase this situation as a celebration of exploring sexuality ignores that this is in the context of an industry that's pretty damn homophobic, post-Katy. If it was about Demi experimenting and realizing she was straight, there's really no need for the coy answers when asked about it. She's under no obligation to talk about her personal life of course, but there's a difference between choosing not to disclose and "maybe I am, maybe I'm not, buy my single tho." Sure she could be somewhere left of straight on the Kinsey scale, but for someone who's generally open about her personal life and publicly supportive of gay rights, it looks like she's just selling bisexuality, cashing the check and moving on. I don't know where you're getting that Halsey used Quavo as a prop? I hate feeling like I'm coming to Halsey's defense on this because I'm not a big fan or anything and it's pretty gross to me that she randomly threw Iggy under the bus, but from what I've gathered she was on the defense because she didn't know about Quavo's homophobic comments. I mean, it's a mess, but I don't see her using Quavo as a prop so much as doing the same thing every pop artist has done since forever and putting a hugely popular artist on a track while apparently knowing nothing about him.
there are way too many angles to look at this from to definitively say whether or not those songs are harmful. like the pressures of being a woman in pop and having to use sex to sell yourself and your music, often at the direction of label execs and other higher ups. but i'll leave that at that. just think halsey, and a lot of people talking about it, are missing or ignoring the many avenues of nuance in this discussion. and yeah, doing what every pop artist has done since forever, using rap artists as props for cred. katy just did it with migos too. i mean ive seen her talk about how important it was for her to get lauren jauregui on the track she's on because of the message she was sending, which is great, but the situation with quavo is such a contrast with that well thought out collaboration it strikes me as an insincere ploy to have him featured. he's the go-to feature artist of the year, honestly lots of people seem to be using him as a prop, even in hip-hop lol. and i know halsey is mixed race but her extremely white producers jack hip-hop left and right. which in and of itself isn't that bad but throwing iggy under the bus when the question wasn't about iggy makes those things stick out to me. its a mess, like you said, and halsey is being messy.
That Halsey interview was ridic. I liked that the interviewer called her out that she could police who is on her album. She just dgaf about it and used Iggy to deflect. I'm not mad that she called out Iggy cause she's Iggy, but she 100% deflected by going after low hanging fruit and that's just weak
I will try to convince the people I'm going with but oh well it'll just be my getting a drink/bathroom break/checking Twitter time I guess lol
I don't check for 4h so I got no horse in this race tbh!!! I usually support all the latino/a artists I can but she strikes a nerve lmao. But I'm a hater so I'll prob be amused as she desperately struggle performs so I have that to look forward to I guess!
update she went the "excluded from this narrative" route I will say I always hated how female artists are pitted against each other, we can have Britney and Christina they're both great
Excluding herself from a narrative that she started and fanned the flames of. She seems so extra. Sis needs media training. I see what she thinks she's doing but she's not the business.
