I'm not the biggest fan of Lanthimos' english movies but liked this a lot more than I expected to. Really funny. Ruffalo and Stone are great but the super whimsical outdoor set design looks like fucking garbage and feels like it's trying way too hard to be overly weird at times

 

the "he has cancer you fucking idiot" got me really good

 

It is absolutely trying to be weird. It’s a whole surrealist art style. The movie sort of forces you to buy into it. I personally thought it was incredibly done, so I think that just comes down to personal preference

 

I like weird shit, but not when it feels like they're making a conscious effort to be weird just for the sake of weird. Dafoe burping bubbles specifically

 

I enjoyed the weird costume & set design way more that the cgi skies & scenery. The costumes felt like they were taylored to highlight the characters where as they skies drew too much attentions to something I didnt think looked good and unnecessary with the sets already doing the job world building.

 

Weirdness with the right vibes and aesthetic is always a good thing imo. And everything in this was spot on for me.

Some of the digital elements could’ve looked off putting to me in a different context, but in this case, the colors and how they worked with the rest of everything made it all fit.

 

Any criticism of "just trying to be weird" is always the most boring possible thought to me. Filmmakers who try and do something unique and different will always be celebrated by me, especially when it fits so wonderfully with the story being told.

I really don't think almost any creative person just wants to be weird, there's usually a reason behind the choice and the beauty of these films is to interpret that for yourself. To just write it off as weird for the sake of it is lame.

The visuals didn’t bother me. If i saw this movie in high school, id love them for the same reason i loved the aesthetics of neutral milk hotel or some shit. It’s dropped down my best pic noms ranking, but this is still a very solid movie.

 

I got thru it halfway and shut it off. I was tired. Maybe I will finish it... Maybe I won't.

 

That’s the f bomb I was most referring to in this comment lol, like ruffalo is laughing with us at the absurdity of what’s happening
