I think @imthegrimace exclusively likes movies with drumming octopi, which this film unfortunately lacks.
Yep, this was great. Visually intoxicating, provocative with purpose, spastically funny, wickedly creative and unique. It goes without saying but so much of the success for this story is owed to Emma Stone thoroughly becoming Bella Baxter. Similar to its fisheye lenses, ambiguously early 1900s time period, and costume design, there is a lot here that's owed to the vibe and aesthetics of the silent film era. And Stone plays into that so effectively with the physicality of this performance. There are many moments here that echo something Chaplin or Keaton would do with their body to sell the scene, from the stilted mobility throughout to the slapstick physical violence and the dance sequence. It's a daring performance and shows a director and star in perfect sync. We've all known this but Lanthimos remains truly one of the absolutely cannot miss directors of the era.
Saw this on Christmas Eve. I'm not a huge Yorgos fan and I wasn't really stoked to see it. I was trying to convince my girlfriend to see The Iron Claw instead, but this was playing at the local Art Theater that we like to patronize and she was really excited. I ended up loving it. As soon as you figure out what she is, it starts firing on all cylinders. Someone mentioned it early, but our crowd didn't seem to realize how funny it was while my girlfriend and I were laughing our whole butts off. Stone is great, but Ruffalo is next level, loved to see him chew the scenery, his reactions were some of the funniest things in film this year. Definitely my favorite Yorgos movie.
Thought this was just okay. Loved some parts (Ruffalo was easily the highlight, loved seeing Abbott and he was great in his small role) hated some others (the adult dr seuss set design, Bella saying sexual stuff while talking like a child, lol so funny!) glad I saw it in theaters though because I might have turned it off 20 minutes in watching at home. I was also the only one laughing throughout most of the movie and the theater was about half full. So @JoshIsMediocre give me a half refund. $4.50 please.
