So funny that @Morrissey and I basically did the same thing at the same time with the same theater experience lol. But I really liked this. All the performances were great but Ruffalo and Stone especially stole the show. Very funny. And wonderfully shot, though the fisheye was definitely overused some.
Just left this and I was enthralled the whole time, the whole aesthetic worked so great, it’s definitely my vibes, I mean an art nouveau boat?! Count me in, all of Emma’s outfits were superb.
One silly but neat thing I love about this, that’s absurd in a way that comics usually get away with the easiest, is that Bella is her own mother and her own daughter. It’s such a ridiculous genre way to say she’s giving birth to and nurturing herself throughout this journey.
This is up there with one of the funniest movies of the year Also has the best f bombs where they break through the tone of the film in a hilariously meta way
it happens a few times, but My favorite is when Duncan waiting in the hotel for Bella to come back from her excursion in Libson or Paris and as she’s explaining it he’s like “what the fuck are you…” in a modern day cadence lol
oh yeah, I clocked that too and actually thought that specific one you mention was going to lead to some kind of reveal of a charade
Haha yeah, it happens several times when max is in the jail cell with duncan and almost makes it feel like the whole movie is a macabre play/comedy made in like 3174 or something about Frankensteins monster and the actors are just as confused as we are
Caught this on New Year's Eve, knew I enjoyed it but wanted to chew on it before posting any sort of reaction. The further away I am from it, the more excited I am to return to it and spend more time in that world. I'm in love with the way this movie looked. Performances were mostly great. Only minor hang-up I have is, during the brothel portion, I reached a point where I was like, "Okay, I get it, I don't know how much more I need to see strange dudes have sex with Emma Stone" lol. I understand why that portion is important, but at the risk of sounding like a prude (and I love weirdo movies), it just went on a little long for me. Otherwise...I really, really enjoyed this. Not best of the year material for me as it is for other people, but it would have been in my top 10.
I don't know why, but I just wasn't into this. I love the visual style which reminded me of Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and I love the movies Delicatessen, Amelie, City of Lost Children. I think I just didn't feel any connection to Emma Stone's character. As amusing as her journey was, it just felt too cold to me. I wish I liked it more, I think I'll have to give it another watch. I may have been too tired that day in the theater as well.
Based on? Just curious. I was worried it would be too quirky for me, but I thought it was quite good.
I would say if you don't vibe with the trailer, there's a good choice you won't vibe with the movie, which is basically the trailer but darker and extended to 140 minutes.
Yeah I agree. If you don't buy into the tone, which I don't think is contrived at all imo, then you most likely won't enjoy it. but you never know
