My son's friends at school have pokemon cards so now apparently my son will also need pokemon cards very soon. I'm probably the only millennial who never got into pokemon, so this is one hobby I won't be able to offer him much help on lol

This is the worst possible time to get into cards. Impossible to find, and when you do (at your LGS) you'll pay a premium. I believe in GameStop has said they'll charge more.
