I saw this girl battling a gym last night by the train station. As she won, I took over the gym. I walked by her laughing.

Update: it was replaced by a cp34 Krabby. These kids don't know what's coming for them when I get out of work.

Took me a while to understand how they worked too. Basically, when you got to a gym that is claimed by your own team, you can either add a Pokemon to defend it or train. There are two buttons on the bottom of the screen when you encounter a gym owned by your team. On the right is a boxing glove that sends you into a training match where you will select one Pokemon to run through the defending Pokemon gauntlet style. On the left (if it is there) will be a button that will have a pokeball and a plus sign that lets you select a Pokemon to add as a defender or leader (depending on how much CP your Pokemon has).

If this button is not present on the screen, the gyms prestige is too low. To increase its prestige, you can choose to do the training (right button) until it increases in level. Every time it increases in level, one more slot for adding a Pokemon adds up. If you choose to train there for a bit a spot will most likely open and you can then add your Pokemon to it.

There were some misleading "guides" posted over the weekend that said if you leave Pokemon at a gym you run, they will come back to you with more XP or CP. I bet this person thinks that is the case even though its not.

That, or they are just being funny.

Lol, I know some people are just leaving low level Pokemon everywhere with a "quantity over quality" mindset and hoping some of them stick. I went on a rampage last night blowing through five gyms because of this. I don't always leave my strongest Pokemon either since I need them for conquering rival gyms, but low levels like that leading gyms are ridiculous and begging for a whoopin'.

    So assuming that this weekend...

I've been playing pretty frequently for the past week (trying to hit different areas of LA), and I've only encountered two of them. They don't seem to be easy to track down.

Just got one yesterday in a very random part of town I have only been to once before. It was serendipitous.

I always preferred Growlithe et. al. to Ponyta.

    2. You can take over multiple gyms at once? There's a dude in my area who's the leader at like 3 or 4 gyms around here lol smh

I've seen two ponyta in my area. One of them I had in a poke ball but the game froze and I had to close out. The second I used like 5 pokeballs but it escaped and ran away.

Also hatched a squirtle today which I was happy about. Hoping he and Charmander start popping up more. I would love to have a Blastoise and a Charizard.

re: that tracking pulse, I read in a Forbes article that the little pulse from the bottom right box is to indicate when a new Pokemon is nearby. So idk, but the direction thing didn't work for me really

Sorry everyone. I couldn't test it but I had read from several people it was real so sorry if it turns out to not be.

A Forbes article mentions the pulse being a notification that a new pokemon has entered your surroundings. Maybe useful if you have it set to just tracking one. (I also have not tested this out fwiw)
