Nah. Some of them are so bland

 

It's crazy how much better Gen 1 designs should be considering the sky was the limit back then and nothing had already been done

Yet yeah it's in the bottom tier

 

I think there are definitely ones spread out over the years that are cooler or cuter or flat out better, but gen 1 every single guy is iconic

 

How is a pigeon or a snake iconic

Other gens make the boring animals in gen 1 look bland.

 

idk man i feel like they were like the first ones I ever encountered in the wild in those games and in pokemon go, so it was the first time experiencing the games in that way and that makes them that? maybe its just for me.
also just in terms of recognition from when a billion people played pokemon go when it first launched too.

I also think that in some of the later generations, which don't get me wrong, are all solid and I love a ton of them, theres a lot of "any item but its a pokemon"

 

Gen 1 definitely has the least bad designs at least

Gen 1 is as inconsistent as any other Gen. Any feelings about design superiority are only coming from nostalgia.

 

Gotta love the pink blob that transform in to other Pokémon. Fantastic design, so creative

 

I’d say the highs are higher than some gens, but the lows are just as low.

Squirtle, Dragonite, Gengar, Machamp, Charizard, Growlithe line, Eevee line, Bulbasaur line, Gyrados, Lapras, Electabuzz, Blastoise, Nidoqueen, Nidoking, all iconic and better than most that came after them.

Gen 2 > gen 1 anyday

I wasn’t even born when gen 1 came out. I just think they look good. Gen 3 is clearly the best anyway

 

Gen 8 is the best

 

Gen 2 is my favorite generation in terms of the handheld games
Gen 1 is my favorite in terms of character design

In terms of design, comparing the two generations would be a little hard for me until I think of Hoot Hoot and then I realize, "oh yeah, gen 1 wins" haha.

 

Imagine if grimer/muk were later gen pokemon, people would be hating on the online like they hate on the ice creams

I think you're conflating simple with bad

 

Ditto is like a really sick design tho

Gen 1 isn't perfect but had a lot of great designs and set the groundwork for everything to come. There are good designs in every generation but some of them just don't feel at the same level and style of earlier generations.

I'm a big fan of Mienshao and Volcarona designs, that gen really came through I thought.

 

Also I hate the trend of humanoid starters, give me some monsters.

Greninja is a high tier design tho.

 

Gen 2 has no item based Pokémon (depending how you view Unown). And Gen 3 only has Solrock and Lunatone.
