6 Gyarados later, and a stockpile of over 1200 Magikarp candy, still no shiny.

 

Woo! This was easier than expected, I only used 4 lures and like 40 great balls.

So to get shinies you just have to catch a lot of the same pokemon in a row?

 

They show up normally in a basically 1 in 4000 chance, getting 1-10 combo makes it 2x more likely, 11-20 3x more, 21-30 4x more likely. If you’re at a 30 combo, technically you don’t need to catch any more because the probablity is the same for any combo 30+.

Edit: i might be a bit off on the numbers but it’s in that ballpark

Perfect, I'll do it then! I have someone else I'm becoming best friends with today...400k XP in like, 30 seconds. Remember when you had to evolve 400 Pokemon with a lucky egg to get that much XP?!

So how does this popping an egg thing work exactly? I couldn’t the other day but even if I could have I’m not sure on it. Does it have to be at the same time to get the xp? If the other person does theirs before I do mine, do I miss out?

 

You both need to have a lucky egg active when the gift is opened

 

Or, alternatively, logged out and pop a Lucky Egg on before the notification appears.

 

Right, that’s the general idea. It’s waaaay easier to get shinies, especially since you can SEE the shinies in the overworld and don’t actually have to encounter them to see it.

Although the catch combo thing works wonders, I got my only shiny so far just putting out a lure with no combo. Just a random shiny Pigeotto the first hour I had the game lol

I've hatched about 20 ten kilo eggs and mostly gotten Dratini and Trapinch

 

I'm heavily contemplating using every single rare candy I get on Meltan until I can evolve him, is that insane?
