people aren’t completely locked out for the most part. in my area if it’s frigid we hit the malls on Community Day or drive around to hit as many stops as possible on Clamperl day. Niantic has started implementing things like QR codes to access regional events in the last year or so, but prior to that they were spoofer magnets

Niantic has begun to lock events behind codes that spoofers would have to purchase secondhand to even participate in

Right, so why would making events happen at different times for different parts of the world be an issue? They can always QR code it to where you are, or do like an EX raid pass for general participation. People shouldn’t miss out because something happens for one day only but they’re snowed in or in oppressively hot weather. CD already does different time zones without issue, this could just be a larger scale version of that.

i’m not arguing that it wouldn’t be cool of them but it would require a whole new infrastructure outside of the game itself. if people have to go somewhere to get a code for every middling event we get throughout the month, how many casual players do you lose? if you send it in the form of an EX Pass, how do you assess who actually lives somewhere and how do you make it up to the legitimate players that system overlooks or deems illegitimate? if you have to raid to get them, that locks people out of events if they work during raid hours or even worse, further screws rural players with limited access

I never said anyone would have to work for them. Planning the game around what a spoofer would or wouldn't do is a failure from the start. It’s just not fair that they do these incredibly specific events that basically never repeat and they leave out major portions of the player base by making a local, get out and walk game function on a global scale every time.

They will never be able to please everyone. It's impossible.

for almost an entire year the region of people that got Community Day first would get totally fucked over because the spoofers would all join an already incredibly dense active playerbase and bog down the servers. it was so bad that sometimes Niantic would have to give them another Community Day. the issues would lessen as it went down the pecking order until it got to the Americas, who have had virtually no issues. they’ve got it right recently but i would argue those players feel very differently than we do about the spoofer issues.

Of course not, but that doesn’t mean they can’t improve a very flawed system. Putting in more work to get the core game up to their goal of not driving around all day or leaving out huge chunks of people is worth doing. They’ve made a LOT of improvements in the past year because of comments from the community.

I've played this game since day 1 (fairly consistently) and all I know is that the one thing they will never be able to work around is weather.

Take this from a guy who's town was devastated by a hurricane. I missed Giratina, Cresselia, and Heatran due to a category 5 (yes I know the news said it was a 4, but I lived through it and I guarantee it will be relabeled as a category 5 when the final report comes out in April) Hurricane.

Weather is just something they aren't gonna be able to work around. I mean I hate to say this, but I'm actually team Niantic on this one because if there is one thing they've proven it's that these Pokemon will always come back around whether it's another special event, research task etc. So, if you didn't get it the first time due to the weather being shitty then you will get another chance to get it.

What it comes down to is that Pokemon go plays off our completionist addiction and most pogo players thoughts are "I need this Pokemon right now!!!" even though we all know damn good and well that it's eventually going to come back around if we missed it.

Also, trading is a thing and a pretty decent answer for not being able to go to an event due to weather (or any reason for that matter).

So, asking for them to postpone events because of weather is a bit silly to be honest. Because it's like someone said. He may have the same weather as you, but he went to the mall in his town and was able to still walk around and play in the fashion in which the game was meant to be played.

So, in the end Niantic gets a lot of things wrong, but there is just too much Earth and too much variation in weather for them to hold events based on weather conditions in certain regions.

I do want to make it clear I’m talking about seasons in general and not single specific storms or something.

Oh no, we talked about weather too much and now my chorus ads are for a winter storm coming. :crylaugh:

I get what you are saying I really do, but I just don't know if it would be beneficial for them at all to scale back most events to coincide with seasons per region. Maybe if it was only a game played in one country I could see that working, but this game is a worldwide game. It would just get convoluted to a point where it would make the game exhausting.

I think the best we can do as players is to adapt our gameplay to the season or just learn to take breaks from the game if the weather doesn't permit us to play like we are supposed to. But, that's just my two cents. Maybe they will eventually come up with a solution.

Yeah, I just think that’s kind of comical on a large scale, if that makes sense. Like this entire game is on its surface about getting our and exploring your local area in real time, but expecting it to be able to take climate and weather and different locations into account is impossible and not worth asking? Lol. They did do a lot by adding weather and community days in general, but you still have something that pretends to exist in the real world and asks us to use it in the real world without functioning like it in any real way.

With that logic, technically speaking then it would make sense to not be able to go out and explore Pokemon in the real world. This is about to get realllly crazy:

Let's say that our reality had pokemon that we would go out and catch and battle the assumption would be that weather would still exist good or bad. So, when the weather is good we would go out, explore, catch pokemon, battle, raid etc. and if the weather was bad (to the level of not being able to safely go out and catch pokemon) then you would probably stay in the house. So, as much as I hate to say it staying inside and not being able to explore kind of goes along with the idea that the game "exists in the real world."

Not sure if that hypothetical situation makes sense or not.

I'm not defending or anything just trying to point out that in the end it's just a game and sometimes things are going to get in the way of us playing whether it's kids, work, school, weather etc. and that kind of goes along with the idea that this exists in the real world. Because those things would get in the way if Pokemon did actually exist.

Yeah I think that’s getting way too hypothetical when at the end of the day there is a real company who is controlling these things and decides when the “real” Pokémon spawn. If I follow that logic that it’s all truly real, why would thousands of Eevees and Pikachus wearing flower crowns be hanging out in areas that are in blizzard conditions? Or Delibird be spawning in tropical climates during summer? There’s no reason for it globally except for Niantic wanting a unified experience for a game that doesn’t have universal conditions.

However, after thinking for a minute, Niantic has set this game up as to where you are rewarded for playing every day with the streaks so I get the frustration on that part of it.

I hadn't missed a stop or catch of the day streak up until October 10th (yeah I know I bring the hurricane up a lot, but it really did affect my gameplay for this specific game and it's really something we are still dealing with here everyday even though the news moved on from it about a week after it happened).

Dude, nothing wrong with bringing that up. It’s a huge deal. And the streaks and special rewards for those do absolutely bring up another angle of this issue, although not necessarily related to just weather.

Now I’m reminded of how badly I wish we could trade items. So many lost streaks wouldn’t hurt as much if we could.

I think a way to alleviate some of the issues with not being able to get certain pokemon during events and raids is to go ahead and make remote trading a thing. I really don't understand why best friends can't trade yet. I'm relatively sure that remote trading was available on the newer iterations of the games for the DS. So, it would only make sense that remote trading would be available on a game that is literally played on a device that was made to do these kinds of things.

That would 100% change everything in a positive way. We can already do battling which I’m sure is more complicated to run smoothly.
