I started doing IV check for the first time and just like I predicted my highest one was a 98% Numel, I should make him my buddy and train him.. right? I had some other options in the 90s but it was definitely a few points higher.

In reality IV’s aren’t super important in this game unless you are like me and a few others who really take IV’s into account. I would look at the meta and start training up something towards a Tyranitar or Dragonite. 98% Numel is cool early in the game but the later into the game you get the more you’re going to realize how useless some of these Pokémon really are

Oh wow, I should've probably looked this up but my friend who also plays told me they're i important when deciding who to level up and use in the future. Would you say they're relevant at all to what Pokémon you choose considering they're supposedly stronger? Like should I still prefer a Pokémon with 80%+ over one with 50%? Maybe I'm reading this whole thing wrong. From what I read it's a Pokémon that's 10% better? Is that 10% just not a big deal?

I mean it matters but it’s just a small part of it. For instance, I have 2 fully maxed out Dragonites

One is 89% IV with a maxed out CP of 3744

The other is 98% IV with a maxed out CP IF 3783.

It’s better but that difference of 39 CP isn’t a huge of enough difference.

Like I would personally keep a 70% IV Tyranitar that is at a level 30 than a 98% IV Tyranitar that’s at a level 10.

It would take much less stardust candy to max out the 70% IV one than the 98% one.

But I do somewhat obsess over IV’s personally so I keep anything in the 90’s no matter what level the Pokémon is

That's a way better example than what I've been reading. So an IV doesn't actually make you that much stronger between a difference of 89% to 98% but I should prefer it to be high in general because a 50% vs 80% is a bigger gap of how strong a Pokémon can get? Which reminds me, if IV doesn't determine how strong a Pokémon is or can get what does? Just looking at individual stats? Thanks so much for all your help btw

Edit: just watched a video that helped me understand better

IV’s determine how strong they can get. But the example just kind of shows that really what matters is what level the Pokémon is because stardust is such a commodity. Like once you want to max out a Pokémon at level 35 is cost around 10,000 Stardust and 15 candies which is really hard to come by if you’ve been pumping it up since it was like a level 10 Pokémon.

For instance I really regret raising my 96% Bagon all the way up from the time it was at 87 CP up to now. It’s taken me a year to get it where it’s almost maxed out. However if I would have focused on a Bagon that I hatched or caught that was at a higher CP level but a little lower IV I wouldn’t still be working on it after all this time.

I will say though that the main reason I obsess over IV’s is because I love the feeling of catching/hatching/trading for 100% IV rating Pokémon. No matter how useless the Pokémon it’s just a good feeling for me to know that I have a Pokémon that is “perfect.”
