It was a critical catch. It is a mechanic they added to the main series games in generation V. They added it to Go a bit back without much fanfare.

 

What determines a critical catch?

 

Pretty sure it's random. In the main games, the likelihood is increased based on your Pokedex completion %.

 

Usually critical catches have a weird orange wisp that comes out of the pokeball's centrecircle when it happens doesn't it? That didn't happen here!

Also, I just had my first ever wild Snorlax encounter!!! It was in an area with terrible coverage/signal, so the app froze when it was in the pokeball - re-opened the app and it was caught! Damn, I've got a wild Dragonite, wild Snorlax, an evolution item and a 10km egg in one day. Used up all my luck for the month there...

 

I've had to critical catches on caterpies. Woohoo

 

I don't know why, but I've had crazy luck with Snorlaxes. I've caught five wild ones, hatched another, and I've passed up two or three as well. I have honestly caught the same amount of Snorlaxes as I have Dratini. It's maddening.

 

I've seen a Snorlax outline twice, in the first week of the game. Haven't seen one or hatched one since.

 

DAMN, just got a dragon scale!!! TWO evolution items in one day - already got Kingdra so don't even need this one lol

After walking my Mareep fucking 176 km, a little Flaffy just pops up on the side of the road, so I catch it, taking me to exactly 100 candies and I immediately evolve to Ampharos thank GOD.

1. You can walk anything to evolution if you put your mind to it
2. Never evolve to a second evolution, just in case you catch the middle one and save yourself 25 candies

 

^assuming the second evolution you catch is high CP and good IVs.

 

High what and good who? Zzz

 

High CP I care about. IV is just too much work.

 

My first Dratini I ever caught was my first and only 100% Pokémon I've ever gotten! Nine months later, he is still 30 candies away from Dragonite and he's already walked 80km.

 

You guys, when you spin a stop & get a 10km egg: "great, a 10km egg!"
Me, when I spin a stop & get a 10km egg: "great, another FUCKING Mantine!"

 

Got a sun stone for my streak which I guess I need... after I manage to find 150 Sunkern candies.

 

How much do you walk? Jesus.

 

No joke lol I've had Dragonair as my buddy for like three months and just hit 80k. I just leave it on when I grocery shop or walk around at the gym, so yeah, you must go out of your way to walk strictly for this app if you're racking up those kinds of numbers.

 

112K on my bulbasaur. Since about the new year.

Then the only thing left to walk is my 11 candy Dratini.... I might just quit lol.

 

60K on my Charmander since January

 

Luckily I've never had to walk over 100km for a pokemon but I think I've done around 70km for two. If I hadn't caught a random Charizard near New Years I'd still be walking my Charmander now for sure. I've gone out to walk specifically for this game 5 times and my feet have hurt so bad after I am adamant I will never do it again!

Also just caught a 96% IV Zubat, so now I have a 96% IV Crobat!

 

Currently at 170.7 km with my damn Chansey

 

Just got a kings rock - 3 evolution items in 2 days, and my 7-day streak coming up tomorrow. What is happening?!?!?!

 

I walked him since right around when Gen 2 started, so... a few months now? I dunno, any chance I get I open the app, even if I'm just going a tiny distance

 

Just evolved an Ursaring with counter and hyper beam

 

Just got my 3rd King's Rock. :(
