Hi people. Creating this thread to just bring about more awareness of POC/LGBTQ+ identifying musicians in the scene and out of the scene. Here's a list of essentials/start off points: Perfect Pussy PWR BTTM Big Joanie Skinny Girl Diet Mitski Downtown Boys Jay Som Bleed The Pigs Screaming Toenail Shopping Halsey The Hotelier Adult Mom Vagabon The Tuts Shamir I.C.E Fist City Wares Edit: To help everyone find the styles/genres they would like add it to the end of your link or description of the artist!
I'll get some bandcamp links in later Emo Side Project Tall Friend Amanda Glasser Imaginary Hockey League Owel
Im a big fan of both these, but I was unaware they had any POC/LGBTQ+ musicians in them. What members do they have that are on that spectrum?
idk how I feel about the two being lumped together but some good stuff's been posted so far, will pop in later w links
home now and yeah, i really don't know how to describe it and obvs i'm just one person and my feelings shouldn't be given more weight than anyone else's, but it makes me really uncomfortable to have race and queerness grouped together. i know it's probably a lot more effective to have one thread for both since they're both marginalized groups and also that there are a lot of queer people of color that get overlooked in individual threads but it just feels so bad/weird to me to lump them together idk why i can't explain it. anyway nana grizol, cymbals eat guitars, high dive, infinity crush, and loner chic are some of my fav bands with queer members. most of my favorite bands w/ POC members are local bands because thankfully we have a pretty racially diverse local scene here, but apart from that boris smile, swings, little big league, arrange (also queer i think), dead to me, are all great. also not to be super shameless but i am nonwhite / bi / sort of nonbinary but like cis-passing i guess idk, and i make music :) link in my profile
I totally understand, I just found that when I created the last sort of thread, there was a lot of overlap and it'd be great in terms of diversifying and people finding cool stuff they would have missed. Also be shameless!!!
Some stuff I've been enjoying lately that I haven't seen mentioned yet: Alabama Shakes Julia Nunes Julien Baker Thao & The Get Down Stay Down The Suffers Better Days (I know they were already mentioned but fuck they're good) Mineral Girls (again, already mentioned but Audrey is the cat's pajamas) Perfume Genius Troye Sivan Jae Franklin Laura Mvula Yuna Lower Dens
Seriously, listen to everyone and check out Mineral Girls if you haven't. One of the best bands out there right now
Always bitter that I never got to see Let's Get It. Tyler's in Dangerkids now, but God did I love their music in high school.
Y'all are seriously way too kind. *smooches* Seeing some names in here I haven't checked out before. Excited to do some exploring when I get back from tour.
Most of mine aren't from the scene but here you go: Abhi//Dijon Allison Weiss Courtney Barnett Empress Of The Internet Lianne La Havas Now, Now (surprised they haven't been mentioned yet) Palehound
mineral girls should come to ireland (i'm sorry but i'm gonna spam this in every thread cause i'm so sad about not being able to see them live :() also I'm so here for this thread, the one on ap really opened up a lot of great bands for me. my first contribution to the thread, is my avatar Cakes da Killa
idk why I haven't just posted this but: playlist w Black artists / playlist w Asian/AsAm artists Some faves from each one: St. Beauty Aye Nako (can technically fall under both lists, like myself which makes me happy) Eyes Eat Suns (can also fall under both!) Charlene Kaye (now in San Fermin) The Vincent Black Shadow
Barf Troop! (Come on, a Sailor Moon sample.) Each member has their own projects going on as well, and they're all so talented. Also, Princess Nokia samples Dragon Ball. I'm alive.
