"Interstate Prelude” “Stop Drop and Roll One” “Best Years of My Life” “5 Acres of Turnips” “When I Was His Wife” “Cheyenne” “Got My Name Changed Back” “Sugar Daddy” “Leavers Lullaby” “Milkman” “Commissary” “Masterpiece” “Interstate Gospel” “This Too Shall Pass”
This is very solid. A little pander-y in spots, but Lambert is prone to that at times anyway. The really cool (and weird) thing is that Monroe's songs are better on this than her own just-fine album from this year.
I think I like "Wild Love" and "Hard on a Heart" more than anything on here, but the Monroe songs on this record ("Leavers Lullaby," "Best Years of My Life") are probably my favorites. In terms of pandering, the only thing I'd say is that I've grown a little tired of the token "look at my clever marijuana pun!" song on country albums. "Stop Drop and Roll One" is...kind of stupid.
Really Kacey is the only person I tolerate it from because she reflects it in the way the music sounds. "Slow Burn" and "High Time" sound appropriate to what they're about. It's not just trying to sneak one in to wink at you.
Kacey also did it before it was this weird fad. Just feels like the "weed song" has become, like, a requirement on a lot of country records lately. Usually, the results aren't great. I love Stapleton, but "Them Stems" sucks. Same with Brothers Osborne and "Greener Pastures."
