    The rivalry is back on

I would not say the Audiotree sessions have a “radio rock” sheen but I would also say they sound a good bit better than most of their recorded music, and still feels like them. That level of production is the happy medium I was/am hoping for.

    Oh alright theory freaks

Sharp 4 playing in the background of the heavier part is freakin sick. Lydian mode forever! @FTank

This will be mumbo jumbo to some people but I really want to share

I’ve always been crazily pulled to the Lydian mode, I have no idea why, it could be bc of my jazz background and being told to play a sharp 4 on my maj7 chords in high school and thinking it was the coolest sound I’ve ever heard. This song uses that mode so well! Almost perfectly actually, and I’m jealous bc I’ve written a ton of songs in that mode but I always hide it/don’t execute it nearly as well.. these guys just went right out and said eff it, if they somehow just did it by ear it’s even more imprsssive to be honest.

Didn't love it on first listen. They'll get plenty more chances, I loved their debut.

I think generally this band manages a ton of complex musicality while sounding completely natural and effortless. It's really impressive.

This is the initial recording board they used in the early Command+S episodes. 15 songs + Skylight (confirmed to be the name of the record), so they recorded at least 16 songs for the new record. I imagine the record will have no less than 14 tracks on it, especially considering the length of individual tracks they've played so far.

Rings, Amulets, Thanksgiving, Easy Enough, Offer, Angelina are all <2:00 (a la Problems and the already named Angelina). Portal and No Drugs are both <2:30. I think we're going to get most of these, but the run time will still be snappy.

(First post here...came just to talk about Pinegrove)

Yeah, I definitely view choosing to keep the production quality in line with their other studio material as kind of an artistic statement, and a pretty strong one at that. I’m sure they knew people were expecting/hoping they’d go in a more polished direction, and I’m pretty confident that they had the financial backing to do so. So, I think this is them cementing the band’s identity in a way; they’re telling us who they are and what they do, rather than what we might expect or maybe hope of them.

Idk, I really think it sounds nice, I actually have come to really appreciate how Cardinal sounds, so this isn’t a disappointment to me. I think my tastes lean slightly more towards the rawer side of production than the average person on this site tho. Yeah, a part of me definitely would’ve loved to hear them sound more like their live performances indicate (a polished rock band), but there’s a definite, unique feeling I get listening to Cardinal that is not the same feeling I get listening to their live performances. I think this band is gonna be one that we’ll have no shortage of live recordings/videos of throughout their career, so having the two exist in separate worlds seems like a great move to me.

I’ve just listened to this song like 10 times in a row. Absolutely love all the room reverb going on here.

Agreed. And somehow they've blown up regardless of the fact that some see the production as lackluster.

I have a more extensive new album post up on Reddit as well as in the Pinegrove Facebook group. I compiled and hunted down every new track they've played live and provided links for each. So if you want to get a feel for the record ahead of time, check out the Reddit post and listen through.

My main issue with Cardinal (if there's really an "issue" to begin with) wasn't as much the production as it was that played live the melodies they developed were so much better than what got put on the album. I can't remember the last time I listened to the album version of Cadmium for basically that reason alone.

What's encouraging is that so far it sounds like the live melodies they worked out for most of the material will carry through on the album. I mean, a whole album of developed Evan and Nandi melodies? Shew wee.

The production makes a lot of sense for the band. I'm glad they kept a raw, organic sound. It certainly won't impede my enjoyment of the record.

It’s fine if that’s what they want their “identity” to be but that’s doing a a disservice to the songs. The reason why the live versions are better is because the production on those give the songs more life and energy.

Like I said, the intruments sound fine and I don’t mind them. Those do have a bigger live feel (though I wish the snare was a little fuller), but the vocals are just too hidden and feel lacking to me. At the end of the day good songs are still good songs, and they can still be effective. But I feel Cardinal and the older stuff is just missing what I really love about Pinegrove, which I find in their live stuff. It’s just slightly disappointing to me to see the potential and how even better their songs could be.

With all that said, I know I’ll still love whatever they put out. Evan has showed how great and unique of a song writer he is and I’m super excited.

Can someone give me an example of better production they think would fit sonically for Pinegrove?

You have an old RFC band like The Tower and the Fool who share some with PG, but take their song Die Alone for example:

That production is so sterile. Surely we aren't looking for that, right?

I look at their peers like Frankie Cosmos or Palehound... Everyone is tending towards more lo-fi and less polish.

    Is there a middle ground?
