I don't think you're in the minority! It seems like it's pretty even everyone's favorite PTV, which goes to show how strong their catalogue is. If you're a fan of theatrics, you'll lean towards Flair. If you're interested in atmosphere and progressiveness, SM. If you want heavy/soft dynamics, CWTS. If you want a more straightforward pop-punky style, Misadventures is for you.
Also, if it's anyone's first listen of Selfish Machines.... PLEASE DO NOT LISTEN TO THE REISSUE/REMASTER...LISTEN TO THE ORIGINAL
I wouldn't say Misadventures is their best or my favorite but all I'm saying is that I love it front to back and it's criminally underrated.
Agreed. i haven't listened to PTV much since Flair but this album was a really pleasant surprise. There's a few stinkers for me on there but plenty of career highlights I think.
My friend pointed out some more intricacies but they removed several guitar licks, as well as small vocal moments that added to the atmosphere. Also, I'm not a fan of how the guitars are pushed forward more in the mix...really detracts from some of the more creepy and moody sounds that are present on the original. I just think it was an unnecessary remaster that doesn't improve on the original at all
Hmm not sure, but my friend and I listened to both back to back the other night and there are some things I can't unhear when listening to the remaster now haha
Where can I hear each one? I honestly dont know which I have on my computer. Are there any glaring details that will help me differentiate them?
They're both available on Spotify! The version of the Boy Who Could Fly times are different, on the reissue its 5:10/5:11, and on the original its 5:07/5:08
Looks like the one on my computer /phone is 5:10. Maybe I have the reissue digitally and the record is the original master and that's why I thought they were different. But is there anything I should listen for?
I truly believe that Vic's work with Isles & Glaciers really influence the post-production process for SM
No dude I already can't believe I've been deprived of this haha. I remember getting an mp3 of Boy Who Could Fly when it first came out, and then didn't hear it for years, I just assumed I misremembered some of those background things. How can I download this?
Extremely positively, especially on the original. There's a lot of interesting electronic/textural work on the original master of SM that, if you listen to Brian Southhall's work on I&G, seems very reminiscent of what Brian was trying to do on that release, especially the later songs. I think Vic carried that over to SM, since they were being released around the same time (I&G - March, 2010, SM - June 2010)
Gotcha. I was going to say, I've always liked how detailed their albums are, especially this one, but this original master takes it to a whole new level. On New National Anthem now. I am in love.
Haha, pretty much, yeah. If only I could find a DL of it without having to just find the CD somewhere, but that's not likely, everything's the remaster ;_;
Damn you got me to this again today, and now all I want is a 10 yr anniversary tour with a 4 person choir. Vic's vocal work and layering on this album is astounding
That would be phenomenal. A choir would take this to another level. I can't think of many other pop albums with the sick layers this has.
I think I care a lot more than everyone else, but if anyone is curious, I can confirm the vinyl pressing most closely sounds like the original Vic master.
