I think Collide with the Sky has their best songs but Selfish Machines is the more solid album front to back.
I'm Low on Gas and Hold On Til May are undisputedly two of their best songs. But the run of songs from 9, 10, and 11 are the three worst songs they've recorded.
On One Hundred Sleepless Nights is probably my favorite off of CWTS. I think we look for different things from this band haha
Bulls in the Bronx and Tangled in the Great Escape are two of my favorites of theirs. Wait, you don't get down to The First Punch? That song rules.
Yeah, Bulls, Tangled (really made me wish ll. explored a more progressive route but whatever), One Hundred, First Punch and Hold on Til May are all top notch. They should have cut 2 songs from that album to make it a tad stronger
not to derail too much, but yeah, that was my first experience with Jason and ll., then got really into their next album for a minute, but their last one was... something. i hope he keeps going on with something, such a cool voice.
Selfish Machines is their second best. My biggest issue with it is some of the vocal layering. There's a choir effect they do with layers a lot on that album, and it doesn't really sound like it belongs at certain points. Other than that though, it's really solid and I'd only put it slightly below A Flair for the Dramatic. A Flair for the Dramatic > Selfish Machines > Misadventures > Collide with the Sky
What would you cut? What examples of the layering are you thinking of? Also, I heard that there's two different masters of that album, is that true? I've always thought the vinyl and mp3s sounded slightly different, but does anyone know what the deal is?
This is true, but I have the hot topic glow in the dark version, and I wouldn't suspect HT would go through all that trouble. Didn't they rerelease it with a different master on CD?
Haha good taste. Stained Glass Eyes is stupid but Props and Mayhem is fine, one of the weaker ones though.
I pretty sure that they remastered the album after Collide With the Sky with the producer or mixer from that album. It brings out the guitars a bit more, and pushes the weirder synth elements further back. I prefer the original, as it gives it more of a vibe-y feel, but its pretty minimal difference.
Yeah, I think the ending of Bulls into Tangled was a missed opportunity, since Props kind of stalls the momentum a bit
Been listening to these guys a lot in the past few days since I just saw them. Crazy how fresh even their most dated songs sound. Also been getting really into Sky Under the Sea lately, I guess I discounted it for not sounding like a closer but wow it's awesome.
I'm glad you're getting into Sky Under the Sea...it's such a fantastic closer since it's the most "epic" song on the album, and really hammers home the sound of the album, almost bringing it full circle back to the first song. I adore it
8-11 by far. Sambuka and Gold Medal Ribbon are my favorite songs on the album...but that's not saying a lot
Guess I'm in a minority here, I think Misadventures is their best by far. Bedless was my favorite song of 2016.
