Listened to the album all the way through today in the car and I wasn't feeling it. I'm not a huge fan of their vocals, and I didn't feel like any of the songs really stuck out on first listen (maybe Forever Sound). I know I'm seemingly in the vast minority on this one, but I'm just not loving it like everyone else.

    What am I missing?

you're not missing anything you just don't like it, which is valid. you may be in the minority on this site but people do feel the same as you from what I've seen elsewhere so you're not like some crazy outlier

Nah, I haven't really listened to any of their earlier stuff. Only started with this one because of all of the great press and reception it was getting.
I've been seeing nothing but universal acclaim, so that's why I gave it a go. I'll try another listen and see with it sticks on the second attempt.

For what it's worth this album and their last album both took multiple listens and really involved listening including lyrics being followed closely to really connect

On the contrary TLLA was ridiculously immediate for me and you may like that style of this band more than this and should check it out

Fair. I will give it more time later this week.

It's really easy to write it off after one listen if it didn't live up to the hype but I do think it's worth giving a little room to grow

Listened to TLLA a bit ago and died a little on the inside at the end of I'll Get By because I forgot the message from Kyle's mom at the end existed

I listened to it yesterday / today and pretty much feel the same way. I liked it, but didn't love it and nothing really stuck out to me aside from a few moments here and there. It was just kind of "there" and playing.

Best explanation I've been able to come up with for this feeling with albums or any entertainment is like watching it through a windshield. It's there, you're close to it, but something keeps you from really connecting with it / engaging with it.

Maybe things will change though. It has only been out two days (although I know many have probably heard it for several days / weeks) so I never cement a piece of art in place (hate/meh/good/like/love) until weeks or months down the road (usually).

This band is really Spring music for me so maybe I'll set it aside until then. Second listen didnt change some of my immediate grievances but I trust these guys enough to make me come round

Sometimes the vocals give me an R.E.M. vibe. Didn’t really hear a Seahaven sound. Also wondering where that awesome band is and the album they talked about.

I wasn't a fan of TLLA and Old Pride until I saw them play those songs live on their last tour. Keep You crushed me emotionally immediately and it really resonated.

I was always so bewildered when people didn’t understand why so many love the new sound, but not the older sound as much. As great as TLLA and older material from them is, it’s an acquired taste which I thought was obvious.

I guess because the complaints I always see about it are "He's just screaming and I don't know what he's saying." To those people, have y'all ever just sat down and read the lyrics along with the album?

I mean, TLLA was not immediate for me either. I saw it praised when it came out so I gave it a listen and it was a jarring experience. I kept listening to it every now and then and was warming up to it when I saw a vinyl copy in a hot topic one day and bought it. I sat down and read the lyrics along with the album and I was hooked ever since.

Just seems like people give it a listen or two and then just decide it's not for them. It's an album that definitely requires more time than that and it seems disingenuous that it kinda gets disregarded by a good handful of fans. Expand your tastes and listening habits. If it's not for you, it's not for you, but I've definitely had multiple interactions with people who have barely bothered to try and it's irritating.

It's phenomenal album and one of my all time favorites. Thank you for your time.

ngl I have so many good albums from there it's not funny. My first record was What it Is to Burn from there on black.

This really surprises me.. I mean it’s a patient record for sure but the ones that usually stick with me are. Usually the ones that peak for me on first listen don’t stick with me nearly as long as something like this one.

So what really draws me in are the instrumentals and how the vocals compliment them. It’s very dynamic and when they get big it feels big and when they come down that’s felt as well. Also the drumming is sick

I think the reason why they aren’t immediate is bc their vocals arnt super catchy. He sings notes against the chords that are beautiful but it’s not a tune that’s gonna be in your head for hours.

I love the sound scapes on here tho and i think fans of dealer would really like this record.

Bay of dreams is one of my favorites I think the vocal delivery and melody of that song is so beautifully haunting
