Damn! I don't know if this one will change your mind, but he's become maybe my favorite artist over the past couple of years and I would love to hear your thoughts on House of Sugar if you somehow missed it. Feel like you would really appreciate the songwriting, experimentation, and general production on that one.
I keep listening to this and it keeps getting better. It's a deceptive record, it sounds unassuming initially but every time I listen I hear something new I hadn't noticed before, just keeps revealing itself. I do think this sounds like more of a true successor to KY than WFL, and while I like that latter record fine, this one does feel more creative and inspired. I also don't agree with the Sputnik review in the sense that Kyle's vocals aren't fitting the record, or that he needs lessons. I mean sure what vocalist doesn't need lessons I guess, but the weariness and shyness of his voice I think works the best on this album and in this context, where the other instruments are also doing the same thing, the thin light drumming and clean guitar work. I think to get this record I've had to really engage with it deeply, it otherwise floats over and passes by, especially since it's short. It's really paying off now though.
Lol imagine having the audacity to write an album receiver and suggest that the vocalist needs lessons
I love the album and like 95% of the vocals but I can see why people don’t like the vocals. Some of the intervals are a little repetitive and sometimes it’s a little monotone
I haven't read that review, but it seems like, if your impression of this is that Kyle needs lessons, maybe you're not the best person to be reviewing this band's records.
I like the record a lot and I dig this singing style but on my first couple listens the vocals did actually stand out to me and detract from the experience a bit.
I do think his vocals don't sound as good here as they did on WFL, but I assumed it was a conscious choice in production for it to sound a little more raw. All you have to do is listen to Fake Lighting to know the dude can sing.
Revisiting their discography and I always forget just how damn solid Old Pride is. And, of course, The Lack Long After is still a stone-cold classic
That riff of Filial (you know which one I'm talking about) lives rent free in my head. I think about it at least once a week and how cool it is.
That's my plan for the weekend to revisit their older albums! It's been a while, I think I even need to get back to Keep You in its whole soon too, though it's my TOP of theirs, I mostly sat down with WFL the last 2 years again, aaand now this new one!
Gave it a first listen yesterday. Definitively a meditative vibe going on. The whole band seem to be unassuming at times lol. I'm not saying that as a bad thing. I like how the "drifting" motif of the first track comes back during Mouth.
