The Smiths have one good song, it’s called How Soon is Now, and the rest of it all is dogshit. A bunch of bands i like liked them, though.
Yeah nahhhh I love the Smiths, I’m always watching old live sets on YouTube, there’s some really good ones on there. It boggles my mind too, they made four pretty meaningfully influential albums in just five years! Not many acts have made the same impact within that amount of time.
Honestly, I’m just being facetious here. Don’t get me wrong, i don’t like the Smiths one bit, aside from liking the song How Soon is Now. My dad tried playing them for me when i was a kid and i didn’t like Morrissey’s voice. By the time i was a teen and could have feasibly liked them, Morrissey was in the news being a dumbass all the time and so i never felt interested in reexamining my first impression. Now whenever i hear their music i have a reflexive response of “ah, this bullshit.” It’s really a confluence of not-entirely musical reasons. Also i like plenty of artists who love them and are influenced pretty heavily by them.
I like The Queen Is Dead (the album) and maybe a few others, but I could never get as into them as some people. I actually kind of prefer Morrissey's solo work (or at least several of the songs), but he has done just a fantastic job of burning that to the ground for me. You can only give someone the benefit of the doubt so many times
I like that Smiths song “Ask.” I always thought 2004 blink would have done a rad cover of that. Otherwise they completely kinda missed my radar. I think when I was a kid I only had room for Depeche Mode and whatever KROQ played at 12pm for flashback lunch. Otherwise I never got into it.
Not to be too on subject or anything but this has to be my favorite album I listened to this year that didn't actually come out this year. I just love it so much I'm so glad it finally clicked for me after listening a couple times when it came out and earlier this year and not really getting it.
I've just read kind of the backstory to "Killer" for the first time, about the references in it, and man, it's a dark song. Crazy how beautiful the song sounds with piano in the Noah collab
when she intros on that killer collab with gunderson its one of the most blissful things my ears have heard.
