so wtf just finding out now she did backup vocals on joyce manor's last record.. holy moly how did i miss that.
It's fucking beautiful. I feel spoiled that so many albums are contenders for the top spot this year. This has been one of my most anticipated though and definitely meets my expectations so can see it being in constant rotation for some time, particularly as autumn comes around in the UK. New versions of "Killer" and "Georgia" are incredible and cheeky lil Conor Oberst guest spot in the album too.
"Funeral" is the song she's spoken about where she sang at a friend's funeral after they died of a heroin overdose when she was 20. Pretty hefty. "Jesus Christ, I'm so blue all the time and that's just how I feel Always have and I always will, I always have and I always will. I have a friend I call when I've bored myself to tears And we talk until we think we might just kill ourselves But then we laugh until it disappears. And last night I blacked out in my car And I woke up in my childhood bed Wishing I was someone else, feeling sorry for myself Then I remembered someone's kid is dead."
Also extra tidbit, not only does Conor Oberst guest, but Mike Mogis mixed the record - so extra treats for Bright Eyes fans.
Just a few lines in the chorus of a song (which is repeated a few times within the song itself), they have a back and forth/couple of lines each before harmonising.
woah do you think "motion sickness" is about ryan adams? he mentions on maron's podcast that he sees a hypnotherapist. also the guy in the song is obviously a successful musician if he's throwing $1500 at phoebe to see one. also the bit "when you met me you said you were bored. and you were in a band when i was born." possible "outbound train" reference? also confirms the guy is way older.
Been wondering about this since the song came out. It certainly sounds like it would fit. But I saw this conversation in the Ryan Adams Archive group on Facebook and someone said Phoebe was known to have been dating Marshall Vore, who played drums with Ryan Adams, as if to suggest she couldn't have also dated Ryan around that time... but yeah, the hypnotherapist thing, and the Outbound Train callback... I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was about Ryan.
Wouldn't surprise me if it was about him. Have to say, if it is, he doesn't come off so good, given this and "Chaos and Clothes."
Just found out it's John Doe (of X) who guests on the new version of "Killer". This is seriously one of my favourites this year. Also rounding out the album with a cover of a Kozelek/Lavelle song fits so perfectly.
