i've seen a bunch of people mention this actually on facebook hahaha she did show up out of nowhere to record with ryan adams SOOOOOOOOOOO
"@mariasherm: with a raise of your digital hand, who is on team "phoebe bridgers is an industry plant"" super not a fan of the take that if a young woman comes out of nowhere, she must not have done it on her own, kind of surprised to see it from Maria.
even more surprised to see @cwhit entertain the thought. I'm just going to give them the benefit of the thought and assume it was sarcasm.
yeah, i didn't mean it seriously, most of the posts i've seen about it have been super halfassed about it and it's more just a funny thought than anything i genuinely take seriously. just a bunch of DIY people that were like "whoa she came out of nowhere huh???"
as someone who works with a lot of young women trying to make it into the industry, I'm sorry if I don't see the humor in it.
yeah as i said i've seen a bunch of people saying it and it's always seemed like a sort of in joke going around the DIY scene more than an actual malicious concern so she probably saw that and took it more seriously without knowing, i know this is very unlike maria to say something like this
just because it's unlike someone to say things doesn't mean they don't actually say things accidentally problematic sometimes
as i said it's more just DIY people being like "whoa how can this person just show up and tour with ryan adams and then be sort of ushered into our scene one day" sort of pretention. not saying it's right but that's the mentality that's leading a bunch of these statements
well it's mostly factually wrong as Phoebe has been building up to this career since middle school. I mean obviously having ryan adams record with her helped, but whatever
well yeah i'm not saying it's right but most people don't know most of that about her. like even her wikipedia page, the first thing is "she released her major label debut with ryan adams", then "she was on an iphone commercial" and some tv shows. diy people are very ethics driven in that regard
The idea of assuming any female musician/band member is an industry plant is just really gross and a terrible, terrible take
