for sure. If someone doesn’t like a band because women like it, that’s sexist. If someone doesn’t like a band that was made famous by teenage girls for other reasons, that is not sexist.

Like, I don’t like their music one bit. I hate that “Love it if We Made It” song. But i also think there are people who rag on them/pop music, or Bright Eyes/“sensitive” folk or indie music because it’s not seen as traditionally masculine. And that’s very stupid.

 

Well I totally understand the idea, this just goes as a stretch in the article maybe. But well, what I wanted to ask on the other hand - what song did Phoebe sing for Joyce Manor? Wondering if it's something bigger I've missed ;d

Thanks! This was quite short, but nice, It's funny I've just recently started getting into JM past material, meaning just going along their whole dischography - but I see I wasn't paying that much attention to hear it, as it's rather clear it's her voice!

Idk if it's quarantine and not being able to tour, or it's just the internet algorithms bombarding me, but it feels like Phoebe did a ton of press for this album, like more than a typical amount. I def don't blame her either way, and she deserves the attention, but it's like I'm seeing her everywhere

When she did this on the pitchfork stream it wasn't too long after John died and I broke down in tears. So so so glad to have a proper version of it.

People have, for as long as pop music has existed, denigrated the music that young girls like as being frivolous and artistically lightweight.

Which, granted, some of it is, like in any pocket of art. But there's also a deep sexism at play.

Seems pretty indisputably true to me.
