i think its in reference to graceland, tennessee.. julien baker is from tennessee and i'm pretty sure the song is about her....also the reference to memphis and elvis "so she picks a direction it's 90 in memphis turns up the music so thoughts don't intrude predictably winds up thinking of elvis and wonders if he believes songs could come true"
Gonna need to sit with the lyrics, obviously. I really liked a lot on here. Nothing necessarily blew me away on first & second listen, but I assume it'll grow on me. Tbh, I've never been completely blown away by any of her stuff so this is probably on par with Stranger for me at the moment. It's good!
Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher Vinyl - Google Drive I did my best to take pictures of the lyric book so everyone can have the lyrics! The booklet is also super dope. There was a sheet that came with the record too that had a poem/short story on the back that seems like it wraps together all the themes of the album, or at least name drops a bunch of lines from the songs.
That essay is by Carmen Maria Machado who is a really great Philly writer. I definitely recommend her memoir In The Dream House if you like that piece!!!
Probably an unpopular opinion but I’m not as blown away as everyone by I Know the End. Don’t get me wrong I love it and everything on here but I don’t think it’s as epic a closer as everyone is making it out to be.
This really, really killed me. This is such a big step up for her. I need like 10 more listens before I can even begin to process it though. Sounds like I’m listening to someone’s diary, which is always a good thing, but that means I need time to relate to the songs... outside of the likes that hit me immediately (and there is A LOT of them)
The last two songs are insane... it ends in such an interesting way and... Graceland Too has gotta be about Julien, right?
I went to a local state park on Lake Michigan with some Bourbon for my first listen.... it was the right move
The production is so beautiful. I definitely welled up when the strings come in on Savior Complex. @Justin Roux like you mentioned on another page, definitely gave me BIBI vibes.
I just said to my girlfriend “should I go listen to the new album in the dark room with no lights on?” and she just doesn’t get it
