I don’t remember this convo at all but I liked your response to it. I guess I blocked that ridiculous conversation from my memory
That’s ridiculous that he wanted to pay that much for a leak (Edit: rather an early stream). Jesus Christ.
I love the 2020 Phoebe Bridgers shirt she put up. PRE-ORDER: Phoebe Bridgers - World Tour White and Black Raglan T-Shirt — YOUR MAJESTY
Without fail every album/book/game I’ve ever preordered from amazon has been received the following day after release. Thankful this one is coming on time, maybe early.
Was curious and it looks like it would take around 5,750 song streams (Spotify) to equate $20 in revenue to the artist. That's wild. Buy vinyl and tickets to bands you'd like to support!
I've never been so impatient about an album that I've bothered to download it just to hear it a few days early
I’m like surprisingly chill about this release, which is weird. I thought I’d be ravenous. Part of it is probably getting Boygenius and BOCC in the past two years.
I admit I have no patience and will definitely listen, but I will not actively tell people to leak it. Not that I know anyone who has ever gotten something early.
Warning: bad take incoming. I don’t think there’s any way for me to say this without sounding like a complete asshole...but it’s hard for me to take this advice seriously from you. Even though I 100% agree with you here and enjoy your opinions on other matters, it doesn’t feel...genuine? here. You are lucky enough to have the privilege of hearing the majority of albums discussed on this site weeks-months early. So when I hear you say “wait to listen, don’t download, etc), it just doesn’t sit right with me (again because I’m an asshole). It feels like you don’t remember what it’s like to not be sent music by labels early. As an average listener, having to read reviews and opinions of other people who got to listen early is torture sometimes. My gut reaction is to think “well, that’s easy for you to say! You’ve heard it already!” When writing this out, I thought “why don’t I feel the same about film reviewers who have the privilege of seeing films early?” Not sure honestly. Maybe it’s because they’re not telling audiences to stay away from the cam versions floating around on the internet and to be patient and support the actors, crew, etc. by seeing the film in the theatre. Downloading hq films early is nearly impossible anyway, so I guess it’s different.
I don't want to argue, but, I think Jason getting a legal advance from the artist/label with permission to listen to it/review it is very different than downloading a torrent someone uploaded to a fileshare before the albums release date.
Like, there are plenty of folks on here who are in movie threads before the premiere date talking about having seen it due to special showings for media and what not, and i bet none of them would support pirating the film before release just because they themselves have seen it already?
I mean. At least it’s not like the guy on the Manchester thread that suggested music should always be a free commodity like water and that they deserved all the patreon tiers for free.
I download maybe one out of every hundred advances I get sent to me. 1) Because with most of them I am fine just waiting until they release and don't wanna go through the process of downloading them if I can just have it show up in Apple Music in four days, or 2) A whole lot of them come in crappy quality or just streams and I don't wanna listen to it via some Haulix web-stream, so I don't. I'd venture a liberal estimate that I listen to maybe 25 albums "early" that I really wanna hear throughout the year. Based on just a quick scan of the post I write every single Friday about music, it's probably less, I have some version of "first impressions!" maybe once, at most, twice a month. The Aces album has been sitting in my inbox (it's a stream) since Friday. One of my most anticipated albums of the year, I'm very excited to hear it and I am probably just gonna wait until July 17th cause I don't wanna stream it on PROMOJUKEBOX and there's no download link. It's just sitting there. So, I just don't agree with your characterization. I'm extremely lazy and wait all the time when it comes down actually listening to stuff if it's inconvenient. Albums I don't have advances for that I want, I wait 99.9% of the time and don't download the leak. The 1975 leaked hours before I got an advance and I was too "lazy" even go find a download link for it. You don't think movie reviewers tell people "stay away from the cam versions floating around on the internet and to be patient and support the actors, crew, etc"? Cause ... every single one I follow has said something like that at one point or another. Most love the entire process and thing of the "theatre" so much I think they wanna marry it.
Also I've only listened to the Phoebe album ... four times total (maybe not even that based on my Last.fm scrobbles saying two, but I'm pretty sure I listened at least once on my phone) cause the quality is 128kbps and that shit sucks. I'm basically waiting for the official high-quality release anyway at this point anyway.
