Still remember that dude puking in the middle of her set. Edit: and the true highlight was running into him on Sunday when I heard someone randomly ask him "Hey, are you good from Friday?" Pitchfork, I miss you.
crowds have, in my experience, gotten better the last year or so but yeah the crowds for some of these artist fresh out of covid were missserableeeeee.
I had a spot on the left side of the security rail in the middle for Pitchfork 2021 so I could see Big Thief fairly well and also have prime spot for Phoebe. But I'll be damned if I'm going to ever be that close for one of her shows again.
They were and it was not a generational thing at all IME. Shows I go to these days full of younger Millenials or Gen Z are typically much better behaved than those with people in my age group.
Okay I have felt this way recently too but wasn’t sure if it was self selection of the type of kids who go to shows im into
When I saw PB in 2023, Christian Lee Hutson was the opener. She came out before he played to tell the crowd to listen and be respectful because he’s her favourite artist. Many rabid fans in the crowd saying how boring he was after the first song. Even booing and yelling that they want Phoebe not him. (And saying like “I don’t want to listen to this MAN”). After a few songs, a few people in the crowd were playing music from Spotify on their phone’s speakers at max volume as a little protest. Ironically blasting EDM on their speakers. A very depressing scene! And I really do think Phoebe is a generational singer and lyricist. Her music changed my life. i moved back further in the crowd to be with the older heads and the vibe was a lot more respectful. But yeah, the kids are not OK, to say the least. My one brag will always be seeing her at a small club here in KC. Crowd was super respectful. Conor dropped in to do a duet (pre BOCC). Tickets were reasonable. Truly a moment that won’t happen again. Also, Billie Eilish played there like a week or two later. Talk about two people that were about to take a rocket ship to fame.
I think it's also the type of music like of course phoebe who makes deeply personal music will get weird fans , also why mistki has to say please don't yell 6 7 I'm in my 30s
Someone tried to fight me at the phoebe Bridgers concert because I told them to be quiet during Halloween.
Seeing her touring SITA in a small club and the first boygenius tour in a small theater was wonderful. I saw her again in BOCC and touring Punisher and both experiences were awful. I literally couldn't hear Christian Hutson during the BOCC tour because people were so obnoxious.
Yeah I saw Boygenius on their first run at the Ryman in Nashville and Julien headlined. Phoebe was only playing songs from stranger. It was so good
Funny part is that Big Thief rocked so hard that night that her set was like a wet fart in comparison. quite literally blew her off the stage and basically stole the headlining slot 90 mins before she ever went on.
That was by far the best I’ve ever seen big thief, the 3 other times they have been pretty dull live. Granted one was when Adrienne had a hurt back but still.
That show really felt like them cresting into their moment. I’ve seen them 3 times as well and all have been good/odd to life changing/cathartic.
Sorry to continue to hijack the Phoebe thread but I am legally obligated to say “free the heavy version of Dragon” at moments like this
I only saw Phoebe live once on the Punisher album cycle in a 3,000 cap room in Birmingham, she was amazing and the crowd were so loud when it comes to the sing alongs and even the support act when down really well but what I also remember is at least Phoebe's set had to stop at least 5 or 6 times because of people passing out though but the crowd were well behaved during that and weren't talking during the more quieter moments of her set.
I had fun at the pitchfork set, but I was most definitely like 8 beers deep, and was just having a great time watching big thief then phoebe.
Oh it was great. Didn’t really know what to expect going in, but everyone just sat in the floor and she played on a couch on the stage. The set is made up like a 70s basement with black lights and lava lamps everywhere and everything was super chill. Christian Lee Huston came out and played on every song except the first one. The six new songs are all so good… and after the set she stuck around and signed something for everyone in the venue.
