Phoebe was so amazing at gov ball yesterday! The crowd loved her. I saw multiple people full on bawling. I think she’ll be in arenas in the near future.

We think Punisher blew her up, but her next album has a chance to be a legit mainstream breakout. She could be one of the biggest names in the world.

If that's the album she wants to make tho.

This line in Boston is wild. Doors opened at 630 and it’s way down the block. Muna just started too

Kinda hope she doesn’t become an arena artist tbh. Her fans are already a lot and her ending up in arenas would probably be the current shows but x 10. Plus seeing artists in non-arena venues (and non amphitheater’s tbh) is way better than arena and amphitheater shows IMHO. Seeing her in small venues before she “blew up” was really a treat and I’d love for her to continue at least relatively in that general realm of “intimate” shows.

Also I really hope we get a boygenius LP before PB3, personally. Out of everything Phoebe has released (and Julien/Lucy) I think that’s still my favorite. I replay that EP so much still to this day.

I was listening on an old interview with Billie Eilish and her dad, and apparently years ago Phoebe was up against Finneas in a battle of the bands and she won playing Georgia. Pretty rad. I guess Billie's whole family are big fans.

Tbh I’m sort of skeptical that she’ll ever be a full-blown arena artist, but I guess it’s not outside of the realm of possibility. She’s undeniably massive, but my gut feeling is that there’s a ceiling for artists who play this kind of music. I feel like she’d have to significantly commercialize her sound in order to achieve the kind of album sales and radio play that goes along with headlining arena shows.

I still can’t process how big she’s gotten and how big she’s continuing to get. I guess the signs were there at the beginning, I just didn’t see superstardom coming at all. It’s awesome though. I feel like she’s come into the world at the perfect time where authentic singer-songwriter stuff is more widely accepted as mainstream. I’m sure Folklore didn’t hurt that.

It definitely doesn’t hurt that she knows how to play Gen Z like a fiddle when it comes to social media/internet presence

I think there’s definitely room for someone like Phoebe in the mainstream

It’d be cool! And maybe more realistic than I’m suggesting

How many indie folk/folk rock type artists have become mainstream, household name arena artists? The only ones I can think of (and these two are kinda stretching the genre label) are Lana Del Rey and Maggie Rogers. Not saying it isn’t possible, but I feel like there aren’t many who have become super mainstream who play music like Phoebe. So I’m curious if there are folks that I’m just blanking on.

That’s true, I forgot about him. Also The National now that I think about it.

Vampire Weekend and Arcade Fire both play arenas, I think Arcade Monkeys too

It’ll really just depend on what happens with LP3, which I doubt we’ll see until 2023 or potentially even later depending on if Boygenius or BOCC do anything else. It’s an immense amount of pressure coming off of Punisher, so I don’t envy her at all

She sold out two nights at the Greek Theatre which has a capacity of 5,900. Combine the two shows and that’s bigger than some small arenas. It’s coming y’all!!

I will say, after hearing horror stories about crowds I was nervous going into tonight. Even during muna the crowd was a little obnoxious, but at least enjoying the set.
But, at least where I was, folks were chill during the quiet moments and pretty invested in the set. Just mostly quietly sang along, which was pretty cool honestly. Folks definitely screamed some weird shit in between songs, but I expected that lol.

Same at Gov Ball, I was pleasantly surprised!
Did your crowd do a “mommy” chant before she came on because mine did and I wanted to die

Would love a BOCC follow up next, but a boygenius LP seems perfectly timed for late 2022/early 2023 since all three of their latest solo albums hit within the past 14 months and they are all on the same touring cycle due to the pandemic.

Is there any indication that bg is going to do another record? I was under the impression it was a one off

I can't find anything on Google at the moment, but I could have swore I previously read quotes where it didn't sound like a conclusion was set in stone for them as a group. Considering they were all on Petals for Armor, Punisher, Little Oblivions, and Home Video together, I'd be surprised if they didn't do a follow up at some point when their schedules align.
