My roommate works on SNL and he came home before I had a chance to watch the performance but when I asked how it was he told me they used fake sparks for her guitar smashing part and thought she was weak for not going all in (she’s not his thing and I think I annoyed him with how much I was freaking out that he got to be in the same room as her for a few days, lol.) I thought it was super obvious that she barely scratched her guitar and it’s wild to see the discourse today. Amazing performance of course, though.
this is the same show where RATM hung a flag upside down and Fear started a mosh pit. people mad that a girl tapped a piece of shit guitar into a monitor a few times while wearing a skeleton shirt. get real problems.
Who was that on lead guitar with her during “I Know the End”? They really worked up a head of steam together on that song.
Just want to point out that the discourse of what is acceptable / extra / unwarranted and what is not is rooted in misogyny and sexism. Full stop. Shut up with the “that was pointless and unimportant”. Just say you view women as less than and go.
Nice! He was on the record, too, I just didn’t know him by face. His dad is underrated and hopefully the son keeps collaborating with a genius.
Smashing the guitar was sick and thematically fits the chaos of the end of the song. More people should smash their instruments.
Look, I'm a chill guy. Guitar smashing is the opposite of my aesthetic. But I'm trying to figure out why a successful musician playing on SNL for the first time wouldn't smash their guitar? It's an iconic rock star move. And this is setting aside this being Phoebe Bridgers and knowing it's totally something she would do anyway, at least ironically.
