Can we just talk about what a good performance that was? She's been doing a lot of great live versions of stuff from this album on these kind of shows, but this one felt really elevated for the format like she was trying to do something special, and I think it worked. All bullshit about SNL's famously shit mixing and the weird discourse about guitar smashing, the performance gave me chills and I think its a good wrap to her high level TV performances for this album.
snl should thank phoebe for smashing her dang guitar and saving that shitshow. good god fire your writers; every segment besides weekend update is awful good performance
I actually think Weekend Update is godawful now as well. They can’t decide if they want to punch down, punch left, punch right, or punch up, and so they wind up making no jokes at all.
I think the argument that this is privilege is ridiculous, but come on. Hendrix’s situation is not remotely comparable. A man who literally had to leave the country to get a chance because of the color of his skin trying to tear down a color barrier in a genre that had actively excluded black people from a sound they originated? The destruction of that guitar at Monterey MEANT something.
not saying weekend is great or anything, but the very nature of the segment makes it likely that there might be a decent throwaway joke every once in a while, and if you're lucky Kate, Kenan or Cecily Strong shows up with a character bit (though these have also been bad lately) other than this you're either getting a terrible game show sketch or a family reunion
Wow people got big mad at her huh There's a saying I came across recently that I enjoyed, these people really need to go outside and touch some grass
I remember when Pete Wentz tried to throw his bass through the bass drum when they were on SNL and failing. A total dumb dork move. Phoebe’s was much more fun and justified.
This guy in a local band from my town would always finish sets by standing up and walking directly through his drum set. One time he fell asleep in a corn field which is unrelated but important to me. I want to tell him he’s being privileged.
Phoebe could probably buy a fleet of those guitars with the amount sweatpants she sells with her name on it.
