I see this as her “never enough” record: give them what I do but the sand the edges off, version. she also is in a need to deliver moment with how popular her last record and BG were and how long it’s been. I liked the song. It’s cool. I also like Kyoto.
Does anyone have a rundown regarding Marshall Vore? Google search has never been this broken and I feel like this forum is the only community I browse that's aware of him being a rapist and Phoebe's connection to him
Music video is amazing. The song sounds like it fades in from track 1, so I am interested in the context of the album. I do think it is a pretty safe lead single but it’s been 6 years, just good to hear new Phoebe again. EDIT: Listening to the song in Apple Music just to confirm it wasn’t a weird transition in the MV, but there is something awkward with how they approached the bridge of this song. That is a bit jarring.
don't really like her music generally, most of it sounds the same to me and is some breathy bullshit, but i liked this song quite a bit
I was kinda interested when the big key change happened, only for them to walk it back like two measures later or something.
There’s several parts to it. He dated Ruby Henley (they wrote “Sidelines” and a boygenius b-side), who was in her late teens and admitted there were age and power dynamics. She’s vaguely written about it on her blog, this is her pinned post, which is all about him: You Caught Migraines From Me it also got mentioned in a lawsuit that he was known to date women in their late teens when he was in his 30s: TW: Assault Two years ago, someone anonymously posted on Reddit that he assaulted them when they were a teenager: https://www.reddit.com/r/sexualassault/s/jf68T6BdD4 After all of this, Marshall, who, like Phoebe, was fairly active on social media, deleted all of his accounts. Phoebe pretty much did too.
Phoebe wiping her Instagram was unrelated, it happened before the Marshall stuff came out IIRC, I think it was just wiped because she was going MIA for a few years. Marshall deleting his social media was definitely because of what has come out though.
The song is fine? I feel like a lot of times when singles get released they’re not the strongest tracks. at the same time, im not thrilled about the whole Marshall involvement though. But I guess things can just be swept under a rug for some folks (which sucks)
damn, chris thile on mandolin feels like a huge and random out-of-social-circle pull. overall my impression is there are too many people involved on this song but what do i know. 9 engineers feels excessive video is cool. don't care for the song at all, but cool to see Alex involved. def feel his presence... the lyrics feel quite pointed in a way that makes me curious to sit with them more. i think i do like that element but yeah, it's just packaged into something that i continue to not really care for.
Love it love it love it , passed the car test with flying colors. that’s a lot of producers on every song. boo Marshall. Guess we’ll just have to keep saying that for the rest of her career
Outside of Marshall co-writing half the fucking album which is an INSANE choice and completely unforced error... ...it's funny to see a lot bigger fans than me not liking this, because I think it's really catchy and a strong single for her. More upbeat and straightforward than a lot of Punisher in a way that feels refreshing. The horns make it feel like something from Sufjan's Illinois.
