Punch-Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood, and The Master are hard to pick from as far his his best work.
I definitely agree. Retains PTA’s flair while still being relatively straightforward and absolutely hilarious. One of his best imo
That was my first of his and I thought it was a great entryway. Then I saw Magnolia which blew my fucking mind. I would argue that There Will Be Blood is also a good entry.
Also I would not say this is his most accessible - I’d give that title to Boogie Nights. I honestly don’t even think this is close to that in terms of mainstream accessibility; he’s on some next level weirdo shit with this (and the past two), and if someone does watch this one first and enjoy it, I think it’s just a good indicator that they’ll like all or most of his work.
What was the consensus on IV? I’m watching now, but heard mixed things. Though I adore the PTA movies it’s sandwiched in between.
I love it, but I love all his films so I might not be the best source for an opinion on this. I also read the book first (highly recommend it) so that might have helped. I know a lot of people are lukewarm on it though.
I think IV is god damn hilarious and if you watch it through the lens of an offbeat stoner comedy then I think you will enjoy it
It might be my favorite. I think TWBB and The Master are better movies, but Inherent Vice is just a lot of fun and Joaquin/Brolin are great. Still salty that it cut some of my favorite parts of the book though
There Will Be Blood is easily my favorite by PTA and one of my favorite films ever. I need to see The Master and I saw Punch Drunk Love is on Netflix, excited to revisit that for I think the first time since it came out. edit: I need to watch Phantom Thread as well haha
