Punch Drunk Love - TWBB - The Master is a perfect stretch of films and his talent is way more refined in these three. Boogie Nights if you want something a little looser. But if you’re looking to get a sense of his work before going into the new film I recommend any of the first three I mentioned.
Oh man i really cant wait to see this one. Hard to convince my gf to see it with me before its not in theatres anymore tho— shes never seen a PTA film so she doesnt realize the greatness and has like 3 other movies she wants to see in theatres before this one
it took me like 20 minutes to figure out that Cyril and Reynolds were siblings, what is this Crimson Peak; I kept wondering what their parents were like to raise those two It was hard to watch at times because Reynolds was such a prick to Alma, just eat the asparagus with the butter and let her eat her breakfast this was definitely gorgeous I feel like there's some symbolism in the fact that his dresses were so ornate, too much going on for my tastes, but he always wore a fairly simple suit with the same black bowtie all the time
Anyone who appreciated this more maybe help me out, So Alma realized that a sick Reynolds was more dependent of her so she used this to counter the belittling and verbal abuse she suffered. But once they’re married, no one is happy and continues to be toxic. Then when she poisons him again, he pretty much knew what she was up to and accepted the fact that he’ll be sick again and remains closer, leading to a child and her more involved in the dressmaking. I just don’t get why he would succumb to this way of living. And did him hallucinating his mother in the wedding dress suppose to allude to something?
I got the impression that a lot of Reynolds issues revolve around power and a struggle for perfection and routine. From the first time they met he was enforcing his will and power over Alma, and molding her into the perfect submissive partner. But when Alma takes control and evens the imbalance of power, even temporarily, it changes Reynolds. It makes him realize that he doesn't need to be in control all the time, and that others in his life will look out for him. That's why after the first time she poisons him he wants to marry her. But eventually he succumbs to his own worst habits and insecurities, causing him to need that control back. They both eventually realize that to have a happy life together, she will need to periodically poison him and care for him. Keeping the power dynamics in balance. At least that's what I got out of it.
Ok so yeah, this was the best. Definitely my top film of 2017. I was just staring at the screen with my mouth agape at how fantastic it looked. DDL, Krieps, and Manville were all brilliant. And that ending, holy hell was that a rug-pull moment.
Hard Eight is really good, but I think they'll appreciate it more watching it after the first other few is all.
