Yep, this @Zilla! Sunny, but not saccharine, indie pop-rock. Great, mostly chill, summer afternoon music.
Hadn't listened to him before today, but this is pretty good. Some really great lyrics and an interesting voice that works well with the Chris Walla production.
First time I heard Spirit Animal this morning I thought “what the fuck is this?” and now I am thinking Spirit Animal absolutely FUCKS
Spirit Animal is the only song I’m still not thrilled on. Overall it’s great and keeps growing on me!
This is pretty good. I think Lean Into Life and Other Stuff are a good bit better than USA (which is great but didn’t hit me as hard), and this sounds a lot more like a bigger budget version of those than a follow up to USA. That was a nice surprise having only heard Model Train Town and Milkman before this morning. If I got qualms on first listen it’s just pretty inconsistent. Huge huge fan of Ask Someone Else, Model Train Town, and Breathing the Same Air. But Milkman, Spirit Animal, Bucket of Water….really iffy stretch. I also think in general some of his more quirky yelling stuff has always straddled the cathartic/dumb line, and while it works incredibly well on something like Pitch a Fit I’m on the fence if it’s as effective here. Mixed on how synth heavy it is - some really beautiful background stuff but some a little on the nose preset sounding stuff too. I love how synth heavy LIL is, there might be a couple songs on here where it’s diminishing returns. TLDR The best stuff on this is great, definitely a handful of songs at the level I was hoping for, but it’s a mild letdown as a whole.
Milkman has some dumb lyrics but is catchy and fun. First part of spirit animal is stinky but I like the end.
Kind of how I feel about all his releases. Half really great stuff, a lot of stuff that does nothing for me
Lean into life has his best songs but also I skip like a third of that album. USA is great all the way through.
