Was not expecting to cry this morning when I heard I Am Not a Cowboy. That song hits a little too close to home at the moment lol.
opening with the Yips is as weird as Isbell choosing to open Reunions with "What Have I Done to Help", one of the weaker songs on the album and its like 7 minutes long lol
Not as immediate or as full of personality as Lean into Life or USA, but still enjoyable. The songs are good but overall feels like a bit of a regression. I like when he taps into the off-kilter, or utilizes humor and he doesn't really do that at all here.
Was fine but I was zoning out at points during my first listen. Will have to give it more listens but I HATE hearing mostly the first half of the album before and opening with the Yips feels odd. Will still be good background music to the summer
I feel like I'm the opposite of most of this thread. This feels like a level up in terms of both songwriting and performance, but I only ever liked and didn't love USA. I think it's good, but it's missing that extra something that this has. Of the non pre-release tracks, I really enjoyed "Ask Someone Else", "Spirit Animal", "Stereoscope" and "I Am Not a Cowboy". "Ask Someone Else" I thought was particularly excellent. Got some Hotelier vibes from that track.
Also, the title track is a great song and works really well as an opener. Don't really think any of the other tracks would work in that spot.
It sounds like a Talking Heads song and is too long IMO Not a fan of the way a lot of these songs end personally
Never listened to a Petey album before and really enjoyed this. Thanks to whichever one of you used a song from this in music league to put this on my radar.
Second time through and mostly all of this is clicking for me fully now. Big fan I think. I'm okay with the opener and think it makes sense spending more time with the rest of the songs. Still think that Model Train, or even As 2 People are the best songs on here, but everything else is growing on me quickly
I don't disagree Yips is an odd choice to open the album when, Ask Someone Else is right there for the taking but I love me some Petey. Going to be spinning this alot over the summer. I am not a cowboy is a special one too.
USA and Lean Into Life have higher highs but I think this is his most consistent album even though it feels like he’s taking some swings on it.
Second listen and it’s clicking more for me. I think USA is his most consistent. Pretty much all heaters.
There’s so much music today between this, Clipse, Wet Leg and Bieber. Gonna take all weekend to get around to everything to see what sinks in.
The beginning of the title track makes me think of Down Under by Men at Work for a second and I love that
This has been such a stacked year that I literally just kept forgetting this was even happening haha. Skipped a few of the singles, some intentionally and some not. Only heard the others once or twice. So the whole record felt pretty fresh for me I liked this, though less than I did off the bat with his others. I will be interested to dig into the lyrics here a bit more because he’s the rare artist for me whose lyrics tend to elevate the music a LOT. But on its own for a first pass, yeah not bad! Switched up the vibe just the right amount, a good move when following up a record like USA
The Yips the song is probably my favorite opener of his if you don’t consider I’ll Wait to be the true USA opener “You are my favorite friend, you are my favorite person” while I sat on the floor with my dog laying on the sofa behind me with his head on my shoulder was a very nice moment “You are the least interesting man that anyone has ever heard of” was a little bit less nice but the truth hurts I guess
