Damn what an album, I think she really learned how to take her song writing to the next level and add an emotional kick to her songs. It was always there before but this feels next level.
After a single listen, I wish there were a few more upbeat songs. First three songs are great, "I'm Sorry" is particularly amazing. I kinda got lost in the middle with the slower songs, and the closer is fantastic. I for sure need to give it several more spins and pay more attention to the middle of the album.
This makes me feel a lot like the last Julien Baker album makes me feel. Some really spectacular songwriting on this.
I think people will be surprised at first bc based on the singles I was expecting more of a full band rock album, but I think once people dig into the songs the album will be appreciated. It reminds me of the Julien baker album not in sound or songwriting but how it has very big moments on songs that are just a voice and a guitar.
Turn Out the Lights is an impossibly high bar for me. I didn't get that at all from this. I'll need to spend more time with the middle tracks just cause they blended together and I wasn't able to give it my complete attention. Only song I didn't care for was I'm Sorry. As always her vocal melodies are outstanding and she somehow can turn a song like Comfort into an absolute jam. Closing track is killer as well.
Yea, I don’t think it shares a lot with that album outside of what I described above. I really tried to zero in on the lyrics on my first few listen, which I found really good.
Oh yeah the lyrics are fantastic Really strong, especially the closer. I was transferring trains during the middle so I don't have a good memory of Magic Gone and Shine though. Definitely lived up to my personal hype. Gonna listen again at work once I'm caught up.
“Something from me” to me shows a true evolution in song writing. Song has a fantastic melody throughout, the chorus is super catchy. Then she modulates keys for the bridge and builds on a melodic motif, really cool stuff.
