Any time you have the opportunity, for any reason, to throw someone under the bus, rat them out, snitch, or otherwise put the heat on someone else, you take that opportunity immediately. The more attention you can place on someone else's fuck up first means there's less attention available to have placed on your own fuck ups. It's basic survival skills.
