Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy talked with NME:

The lead single may have that classic Fall Out Boy energy but, according to Stump, “it’s not a throwback record”.

“I didn’t want to go back to a specific style, but I wanted to imagine what would it have sounded like if we had made a record right after ‘Folie à Deux’ [Fall Out Boy’s divisive 2009 album] instead of taking a break for a few years,” said Stump. “It was like exploring the multiverse. It was an experiment in seeing what we would have done.”

    And:

Stump then told NME that it took a “while” for the band to agree on the vision for ‘So Much (For) Stardust’ with producer Neal Avron [who’d previously worked on 2005’s ‘From Under The Cork Tree’, 2007’s ‘Infinity On High’ and 2008’s ‘Folie à Deux’] acting as the “catalyst”.

“He was a little hesitant because he doesn’t really produce records anymore,” explained Stump. “He’s gone onto bigger and better things. Pete was a little hesitant as well because he didn’t want to do a throwback record, but I asked him to trust me. Neal has this ability to get the best out of us, so I really fought for him to be involved. He finally said yes, Pete said yes and as soon as that happened, it was like swimming for a fish; it just happened so naturally.”

    And with Kerrang:

I probably can’t talk about it yet, but it was the first song we wrote – it was written long before we got Neal onboard, long before COVID-19, and there’s a couple of things in there that I think people would be very surprised to hear lyrically. Pete was talking about the state of the world, and it seems like he landed very surreptitiously on what was about to happen (laughs). So there’s something magical to me about the way that happened. There’s a little bit at the end that directly references COVID, that was added after the fact, but the rest of it was all just Pete thinking about the world and, well, it’s been a weird bunch of years, hasn’t it?

Still so confusing to me why Folie wasn’t liked by fans and also left a bad taste for the band. It might be my favorite record of theirs front to back. It’s them at their greatest.

I personally like FAD - there was enough in there that I could connect with where the whole album was eventually able to resonate with me. But I’m also not surprised that people hated it. FOB took some big risks with it when most people just wanted them, at the time, to sound like all time low or boys like girls. And it never really had strong commercial success, so people couldn’t connect with it on the radio, etc. like the prior albums.

I don't know about you, but I couldn't care less for a song(s) about Covid. It's already overplayed enough by comedians these days, I don't want to sing about it.

I wonder if the resurgence of the 00s pop-punk sound led them to be more comfortable aiming for the sound they're achieving.

Yeah FAD is their best work it's a shame it's not received well from the masses.

Pete had to put this album out this year to avoid a 20 year TTYG tour.

It's crazy to me they're not on Island anymore. I wanna know the details behind that move.

I’m more of a casual fan of this band (although this post doesn’t sound like it lol), so I’m not sure how much this means, but I agree. I understand to an extent how their pop-punk purist fans who only like TTYG might not like Folie. I don’t understood how fans who were with them as they progressed from TTYG to FUCT to Infinity suddenly thought Folie was somehow a huge stylistic shift. It felt like a pretty natural progression to me.

Plus, Patrick’s voice sounds so good on Folie. I listen to Disloyal Order and Headfirst Slide all the time. I love how deep his voice gets on the intro to Headfirst.

I often wonder how much of that sensation was just the singles for FAD not being particularly well-received, which had an obvious downstream effect on critical and commercial success.

Idk. I'm old. TTTYG is the only FOB album I really love, though I also enjoyed the two that came after.

I remember enjoying Folie a fair bit when it came out, at least more than I liked IOH, but both of those albums as a whole kinda bounced off me at the time. Then, for whatever reason, in late 2021/early 2022 I went on a HUGE Folie kick out of nowhere and discovered it might just be my favorite.

All that to say I'm super psyched for the direction this new album might be taking, especially after the lead single.

Legit the first I'm ever hearing about it being divisive. That was a solid banger for me from day 1. Probably my favorite of theirs. Also has aged incredibly well.

Folie A Deux didn’t hit for me when it first came out. Maybe I had finally moved past Fall Out Boy by that time. However, it is easily the album I have learned to love the most after the fact. I return to this album non stop. Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes and 20 Dollar Nose Bleed are two of my favorite Fall Out Boy songs ever.

I'm the weirdo who loved TTTYG and FUTC and enjoys Folie a lot, but has never been able to get into Infinity On High. By all accounts, I should've loved that album but it just never clicked with me. Not sure why, I was as big of a fan as you'd find after FUTC

This was me as well. I like certain songs on it, but the album as a whole just never did it for me.
