Megan Rose Dickey, writing at TechCrunch:

“It is unclear how long this economic uncertainty will last and therefore, to prepare accordingly, we have made the difficult decision to part ways with 13% of Patreon’s workforce,” a Patreon spokesperson said in a statement to TechCrunch. “This decision was not made lightly and consisted of several other factors beyond the financial ones.”

Saying they had a huge surge of new creators join their platform and also we need to fire 30 people is so gross.

They say it's not just about the money but the timing couldn't be worse

it's interesting that they bring up the topic of performance reviews in this release. leads me to think they may have laid off some poor performers in this batch or people that just didn't buy into the new direction they want to go. that happens all the time when organizations execute layoffs and it's not necessarily always a bad thing.
