Interesting. I'm not big into Paramore, this song won't change that, but it's pretty catchy

Sounds like a self titled B-side to me. Nothing wrong with that. Still catchy.

I really like this, even though I will miss their older sound if this is what they're aiming for now.

  4. I'd disagree, personally. That "rock bottom" line at the end of the chorus is so pitchy and spunky, it's not a thing most pop artists would be willing to do. Even if it's a short tag within the song, it's still a moment that's risky for a single.

  6. Yeah, one of my first comments in this thread pointed out the similarities between this song and "Ain't it Fun." That's why I think this song is a perfect (and probably deliberate) first single. This song should be able to keep the interest of all the people who hadn't heard of Paramore before "Ain't it Fun" became such a massive single.

Also, I'll side with @St. Nate with the observation that your concept of "honest" lyrics doesn't fly. Everything about this song and the lyrics across the self-titled seem extremely auto-biographical. There are plenty of songs that, from as much as we can know from an outside perspective, really appear to be digging deep into the current life struggles of the band members. Now, if Hayley and co. decide to set her lyrics to a style of music that doesn't particularly interest you, that's fine; that's your taste. But I don't think Paramore's choice in genre should (or even CAN) dictate how "honest" the lyrics are--that's a total confusion of categories.

I think this is really cool and I don't even like Paramore. The drums are fantastic and that Rock Bottom line is so odd and catchy.

Doesn't sound bad but it's a one and done for me. I don't think I'll listen to it again unless it's on the radio at the gym or something.

When people say the phrase "honest music" it makes me feel like what they really want to say is "I only listen to REAL music" and they're just trying to phrase it differently.

Honest music doesn't exist, if a band is writing music and songs they enjoy and they're having fun with it, then that's all that matters.

This song is great, got me grooving and it seemed really fun. I liked it a lot and I'm interested to hear what comes next.

i dont think that pop artists always let the genre dictate the integrity of their music, but i think a lot of the time it does. there are exceptions like ed who makes pop songs that are for sure as honest and real as it gets.

Sounds like they made a single with Daft Punk, and I am 100% ok with this.

"Real" music doesn't exist either, just like honest music.

In an attempt to steer clear of any arguments, I'd simply recommend you check out this New York Times interview:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/19/...y-williams-after-laughter-interview.html?_r=0

If you can't read the whole thing, here's an excerpt:

Ms. Williams, never one for love songs, channeled her disquiet into an album preoccupied with betrayal, disappointment and regret. “Hard Times,” the opening song and first single, begins with lines like,

    All that I want
is a hole in the ground
You can tell me when it’s all right
    for me to come out.

Elsewhere, she sings, “I can’t think of getting old/it only makes me want to die,” while other album highlights are titled “Forgiveness” (sample lyric: “I just can’t do it yet”), “Fake Happy” and “Grudges.”

“I couldn’t imagine putting something on an album that says ‘life’s great, everything’s cool, party with me,’” Ms. Williams said. And it’s true that despite long-running accusations of major-label meddling in Paramore’s career, the band has written its own often-bitter songs across three straight platinum albums without fiddling from the pop machine.

If any Paramore album "wasn't honest", it's Brand New Eyes. It's clear that there was a lot of internal hostility before and after that album, but they act like everything is fine on that record (especially Where the Lines Overlap). Although that and S/T are currently tied for my favorite, so still an excellent album.

I can't help but feel that it isn't "honest" is code for thinking it's too pop but not wanting to say that. And yea there are plenty of honest pop song writers, but Ed Sheeran is not one of them. Sia, Lorde, Bleachers, and the 1975 all would've been much better examples.
