Don’t read the iTunes reviews, lol. They are wild. One person said that Josh Farro was the heart of the band and that pretty much tells you all you need to know.
It's definitely well below the last two albums for me. Only a few songs I'm likely to keep around (all from the back half)
imo it's better than after laughter but it's more suited toward my mood and my taste in groove-based atmospheric rock music than after laughter, a great album, is i guess it's been a few days and i can say this, but it's prob tied with the s/t for my fave paramore album even tho i'd give it to the s/t nine times out of ten
After Laughter came out at the absolute perfect time for me- excited for our upcoming wedding, but still struggling with depression and some other demons I’d rather not get into. But wow did that album just hit so hard. I didn’t expect this one to hit as much as that one did, and that’s ok. I’m just enjoying it for the most part. I can’t rank it yet. Maybe in a few months! Overall, I’m super happy with it
Lol yikes. It's crazy to me that they didnt utilize Taylor's songwriting in those early records. He only had writing credits on a couple BNE tracks. I don't know if that was Taylor not being confident enough in his writing at the time, or maybe Josh being very controlling over the songwriting.
He just did have a different role back in the day it seems, fully embraced his skills later on. Really love the tones he uses, that's for sure!
this is what happens when you have two tabs open and don't read which one it was in. it's for the tour thread MY B.
What a good album! In addition to the singles, I adore Figure 8 and Running Out of Time, and feel like others are still growing on me. It's so cool to see them move from one fully-realized sound in AL to another fully-realized, albeit very different sound in This Is Why. Coming in late to the "hooks" discussion, but I'm wondering if part of the disconnect with this album for some is that, post-Self Titled, people have been primed to hear a certain kind of Paramore, more pop-forward and radio-ready. They blew up again on the short-form content platform that is Tik Tok, and became known as inspirational for people like Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish. I love all of that, but I wonder if it got lost in translation that Paramore was never trying to go for that kind of thing—not even with After Laughter. Paramore is a band, with a spirit that is very punk and counter-conventional in many ways. They are far more likely to intentionally subvert your expectations than fit in a box. So, to see them shift their sound and go for a more avant-garde, funk, post-punk kind of thing is super cool to me. And fits with their approach to everything after BNE. It's not that kind of "poppy," but ya'll, this thing has hooks. It's a jam.
My wild uneducated guess is they return to a poppier sound with huge hooks on the next record and this album quietly slides a tad into the background of their discography as a mini-deviation that retains a cult following amongst P fans. Although very different genres, it gives me King of Limbs vibes as an interesting novel shift but maybe, in hindsight, it’s not the start of a new direction as much as a little creative jaunt before the band gets back to their main business.
a few pages ago i said that they needed to get this out of their system and people didn't like that. i 100% imagine them going back to their after laughter sound and experimenting way more on future records.
I guess people doidn't like that, cause both of these comments make "wild uneducated guesses" and that's it ;)) which is fine, but what purpose does it serve, right after an album's released it only seems a bit patronizing and dismissive edit: while that one comment above at least doesn't seem disrespectful, so there's that
I just don’t love the insinuation that this is a sidestep or lesser album for the band. I know it hasn’t even been a week, but it feels like an essential part of their discography to me. The band is always going to chase what fulfills them, and maybe they’ll do a more pop-oriented sound in the future or maybe they won’t.
I loved That's What You Get in highschool, but now it's just so cheesey to me. I've never liked Pool, it just doesn't grab me. A+ pick on Last Hope, though. It's my favorite. And Careful fucking slaps.
the next album will be one 80 minute long song where Hayley sing/speaks like she does on the C’est Comme Ça verses. There won’t be a chorus. It’s just a riff, verse, riff, double verse, riff… on repeat the whole time.
