Regarding the tuning, I don’t think it’s Melodyned, which may be what people are reacting to, but I don’t think it’s more than a few cents worth of difference most of the time. It just sounds raw to me, not bad, but that’s just my personal opinion
Listening to the four released songs in the car, I'm just impressed at what a mess Local God is. I swear it sounds like they mixed up instrument tracks and put random ones together in the wrong song. Not to mention the verses, chorus and bridge in general sound like three different songs. It's a MESS Don't Let The Light Go Out isn't bad to say something good. But there's still a part where he's just belting it and it doesn't sound good to me lol
This is absolute trash. Can’t get over how bad his vocals are in this album. Absolutely loved pretty odd…
Those previews are straight up unappealing, I don’t think I’ve ever heard Brendon sound this bad on a recording
I actually really like the new song, the random high notes in the chorus actually really work for this one and the instrumental and guitar solo is really cool. Dope video too
Still doing my listen-through too. I still think Pretty Odd is a really good album, the orchestration/instrumentation is absolutely gorgeous and the songs are super catchy. Lyrics are mostly nonsense and I don't really like Ryan Ross' voice though V&V is still neck and neck with Fever for best Panic album, just bangers front to back
Pretty. Odd. is one of the biggest growers ever for me. Close second behind Fever for me, they should have never let Ryan sing though.
I think he's been over singing for years, but it's really bad on these new songs. But I actually like this new one!
Never listened to the Young Veins, but I like Ryan's voice on Pretty. Odd. Easily my second favorite after the debut. Then Too Weird To Live, then everything else.
I think Brendon wanted to do an album without overdoing the production like on the last couple of albums but felt since he's recording to tape, he feels the need to really belt it to prove he can sing without AutoTune and he ends up oversinging like he's done a lot the last decade give or take. I'm digging what he's trying to do, I just think the execution is flawed.
Yeah I agree, I think a bit more restrained vocals could’ve made a huge difference. I definitely respect that he’s using less production on his voice but the execution sounds off.
i just wrote this elsewhere but i’m pasting it here: both pretty. odd and this are power-pop records but whereas the former retained the sprawling '60s psychedelia that kind of got lost in the '70s and '80s, viva las vengeance embodies the latter decades' clarification of power-pop until it sounded as sharp as a razorblade's reflection in a coke mirror. one song ("sad clown") sounds like the elo discog accordioned into 3-4 minutes. there's also a lot of queenish orchestral/musical theater-ass excess that kind of takes over the second half of the record. i adore it ofc. even when urie’s singing so hard that it sounds like his voice is boiling. it’s part of the album’s energy: not everyone is going to love it, clearly, but to me it sounds like a manic episode transposed to rock band instruments, full of breakdowns and buildups and digressions and spirals and reprises and etc. it’s dope i’ve still only heard the shitty leak lol
I know genre is fluid/doesn't really matter, but I've never thought of Pretty. Odd. as a power-pop record haha
what he's doing on these new songs feels way more like 'oversinging' (?) than anything i've heard him do before. on the topic of autotune or overproduction or whatever - i honestly think that if you can have perfectly tuned vocals on your album you should just do that with no hesitation lol. don't waste any time proving anything to me just give me great sounding music please.
