I feel like vocally he’s just sound strained on every song, like he only wants to sing super high and loud this time. Idk, maybe it’ll be more varied but I’m not super excited for this.
Yeah, all of these songs sound like Brendon was sick of being told "We miss the old Panic!", so he decided to make some throwback songs, except he literally had amnesia and couldn't remember what the first two albums sounded like, so he approximated what he thinks the first albums sound like based on their Wikipedia synopses. Like as much as people hated on the last two albums, at least he took risks and followed his own bizarre influences. This just feels so restrained and forced.
this is a roundabout way of saying "it doesn't sound like the first albums at all" which i'm sure it intentionally doesn't sound like the first albums at all he made a totally unhinged power-pop record from the sound of it. as i've established a thousand times on this thread, here for it
I really do like some of the instrumentals in the preview but it sounds like his vocals just aren't going to be for me this time around. I thought he oversang on PFTW but he sounds worse now.
I started relistening to all of their albums because it's been a while for most of them Fever still holds the fuck up
Same... got super bored this weekend so went into work and cleaned up my office and listened to FYCSO for the first time in awhile and it's insane how you can just recall everything word and beat as if you traveled back to 2005.
I just can’t get over how rough his vocals are on these new songs. Out of tune on every song so far and not because he doesn’t have the skill set to do it, he does, but because he doesn’t harness it and ends up missing the mark.
I am a huge power pop head, I didn’t love the first single but was excited about a Costello influenced direction. Unfortunately though, these songs are just boring.
"You're the only one who knows how to operate... my heavy machinery" I want to make so many dick jokes. I like the new song, but I don't love it. The title track is easily my favorite of the released songs thus far.
A few weekends ago, we took the kids to a weekend getaway about 2 hours and 45 minutes from our home and I just put PATD on at random for the entire drive and man, so many fucking good songs across all the albums and I was really excited for this album when he announced it, but these are somehow all misses for me. I hope it'll grow on me, and I tend to believe it will, but right now, I have like, next to zero excitement for this release after hearing these singles and all the clips.
Song's pretty solid, better than the last two. The Queen guitars are nice. Still prefer the title track.
I really really love Local God, it's the kind of song that feels instantly familiar and I can't really pinpoint why. New song is pretty cool, Middle of a Breakup is the only one that I'm not fully sold on. Also don't really get the complaints about Brendon's voice personally
This is the first time I’ve looked at this thread and I’m honestly shocked this is getting such a tepid reaction. I love this so far, it’s shaping up my favorite since at least Too Weird To Live. New song slays. It’s shaping up to be the kind of record only he could make, since not many people have those pipes AND power-pop type musical leanings. I could see an argument that it’s over the top, especially since 3/4 singles so far have a key change into the chorus, but I’m personally really excited for a record that combines Panic theatrics and bombast with this type of raw guitars. I can see the Costello stuff for sure, but on the whole I don’t really think there’s any album I know that sounds exactly like the direction this is going. And I like that direction so I’m here for it.
My issue so far is that every single song has a moment when he's singing that my ear hears something that sounds very off. And then I'm second guessing if one of the most talented singers of our scene/generation is out of tune and how that made it passed everyone and feel like I'm going a little crazy. He's out of tune, right? Or what am I hearing?
@sophos34 is the one who correctly posited that the band tuned to a lower frequency on The Dangerous Summer self-titled, maybe they can assist here?
It is really bizarre to me to feel no excitement leading up to Friday. Title track was okay but middle of a break up didn’t sell me. I can’t remember if I listened to local god in full or not. The one released today sounded the best from the clip but I haven’t even felt compelled to listen to it. I’ll probably just wait until Friday when the whole thing is out and hope to be pleasantly surprised!
