Fair. They’ve always been a VERY theatrical band. If you’re just checking them out, I’d start with the beginning (Fever) and go in order of release from there.
I really like the verses in Local God but the chorus just doesn't work for me and then it just keeps happening.
I am kinda excited to listen to this even though I know I probably won't dig it. It feels weird for him to put this out after the last two, and I think DOAB was pretty good, PFTW being even better. Also the fact his last few singles were hella successful Idk I know Brenden always did what he wanted but this album feels like him trying to capitalize on the old pop punk style/sound. Don't Let The Light Go Out is the only good song from the singles I feel
I wouldn't really call anything on this album pop-punk, it sounds much more Queen and musical theater inspired. I actually do respect him putting this out after by far his most successful album (singles wise), I don't see anything on here getting nearly the radio play that anything on the last album did It's definitely growing on me
five minutes ten minutes to a half an hour? for the rest of my life leave me aloooooone leave me alooooooone your majesty’s magnificent my tragedy is imminent even though i’m smiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiling i’m cryyyyyyyyyyyying
Ehh I should've explained myself better haha, I don't think this album is pop punk at all. Something about it just feels forced to me
I think Urie succeeded here with this album. It's a fun record and I'm sure was a blast to make. I figured it wouldn't be everyone's thing but you'd fool yourself to think a Panic album wouldn't be theatrical in the slightest. Some of the stylistic choices didn't hit with some I suppose. Wish more habds would take creative risks. No problems with his voice, sounds great to me. It's a different album aesthetically sure but this type of shit was always the heart and soul of the band.
Really enjoying the album on my first listen, though it isn't hitting me as hard as Prey for the Wicked did at first. I appreciate what he tried to do with this album and I think it works for the most part, a few specific moments/lyrics in songs standing out as exceptions.
I did a run-through before listening to VLV; they really have a solid discography without too many huge misses. I go back and forth on rankings depending on my mood, but for me, Vices is for sure my favorite, and there were fun ideas on Pray - most of which didn’t land. V&V P.O. DOAB TWTL AFYCSO PFTW Finally taking my first listen now; younger me would be amazed by my restraint!
I think this is a decent album. I think he definitely got what he wanted for a Queen/Costello/Joel/amalgamation-of-the-70s record, and it’s a lot of fun. I could have used a little more variety and little less straining high notes, though I don’t think it’s too off-putting. Title track and Say it Louder are top-tier Panic! for me. Ending track is super cool. My standouts are: Viva Las Vengeance Don’t Let the Light Go Out Say it Louder Sad Clown Do it to Death
Does that pass as a review these days? Shite write up. Here's one with actual information https://www.grammy.com/news/panic-a...wn-classic-rock-albums-new-album-brendon-urie
Oooo I was trying to figure out what inspired Something About Maggie. Of course it was Jellyfish! It sort of sounded like Queen (as does Jellyfish), but I knew there was something else it resembled even more. Nice.
After the singles really not doing much for me, I’m enjoying this a lot more than I expected. Might help that the radio station we listen to at work plays Viva las Vengeance every two and a half hours. I don’t think this is like elite at all, but after the last three albums kind of feeling like worse revisions of the same sound, this feels a little fresh.
This album makes me want a full-blown rock opera from him now. Like, the pieces and parts have always been there, and I feel like he tried to explore it even more with this album. So hopefully this is the bridge to something even greater down the line.
Re-listening to this, can't believe they didn't release "Sugar Soaker" as one of the pre-release singles. Such a snappy tune.
This album is hard to rank song by song, because some songs are half great, some are half really bad. Like, Star Spangled Banner's chorus is a dumpster fire, but the verses are really cool. Sad Clown is a mess to me, but that instrumental break down near the end of the song might be one of my favorite moments of the album. BUUUUUUT if I had to rank I'd go: Say it Louder Don't Let the Light Go Out Viva Do It To Death God Killed Rock N Roll Something About Maggie Local God Sugar Soaker Middle of a Breakup Star Bangled Banner Sad Clown All By Yourself (most boring and bland song on the album)
