skimmed through a few tracks and while many of the early criticisms ring true, it seems like there's still plenty to enjoy here. i can see a lot of this going OFF live.
Not sure why I bothered to look but Sputnikmusic rated it 1 star with the title "Viva Las Sex Offender" woof.
Also, looking at the credits I see Janis Ian got a credit and that melody is definitely ripped from "At Seventeen."
Maybe it's because I went into this album with rock bottom expectations but it's not nearly as bad as I thought it'd be. Instrumentally/musically it's actually pretty interesting. Not worth repeating all the comments about his vocals, but yeah, I wish he would have toned it down a bit on a lot of these songs, because this could have been great. This will undoubtedly grow on me, as both Viva and Local God already have over the past few weeks.
The interpolations are Janis Ian ("Don't Let the Light Go Out" / "At Seventeen"), Russ Ballard ("God Killed Rock & Roll"/ "God Gave Rock and Roll to You"), Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez ("Sad Clown" / "Into the Unknown") and Eric Carmen ("All By Yourself" / "All By Myself")
After my third listen: I find half of it interesting and toe-tappy, and kind of fun, and half of it nails on chalkboard with some of the dumbest lyrics and it comes across as theatre kid self-indulgence. (Butch Walker does the piano-man throw back sound way, way, way better on the upcoming Glenn album, and that also makes a lot of this pale in comparison.)
I don't know if/how much he was involved at all to be honest He has a co-write on "Do It to Death" and "Say It Louder"
There's a whole lot going on here. It feels like about 40 songs worth of ideas crammed into the 12 which made it onto the album... and that's not necessarily a bad thing
In my experience, AllMusic has the best non-biased reviews because there is no overarching editorial brand they are trying to maintain.
Ok on 3rd listen and this rips. I mean I get why people don’t like it, it’s all pretty absurd. But it works for me
My wife likes this album, but even she was like "why....no...HOW is he so out of tune?!". I appreciate the direction, the instrumentation, and the energy this album gives off, but dammit...I just can't help but feel he missed the mark on the delivery.
I need to give a FULL listen still but after hearing the singles and skimming through it this morning: I'm digging about half of it, and I can see the other half never getting a listen. I don't mind a lot of the melodies and ideas, but he's definitely oversinging on most of it and it seems like some of it could have benefitted from really nailing a take (almost seems off-key sometimes). I think it just needed more work and more time dedicated to song structures and sequencing but there are some insane ear worms on it. I still like the direction better than the last two records
The verses of "Star Spangled Banner" definitely pull from "Reelin" in the Years," too. God this chorus is obnoxious
There's a lot on here I like and some stuff that doesn't work for me. Looking forward to seeing how it grows on me.
