Test geniuses!

 

Played a weird match earlier where the room had 7 people on my team. It kicked everyone out before the match started though

 

I had that happen yesterday, was playing as Lucio and got the "6" mark on my speed boost and was very confused

 

Lucio is actually a DJ from Toronto and he makes beats for Drake.

How much did you get to play/what did you think?

 

So some tips for competitive that is purely based in my own experience:

Ranking system can feel arbitrary, I went 5-5 during ptr and 6-4 for the official competitive mode but ranked higher for ptr. I noticed that you're more likely to rank higher if you stick with one hero throughout those first ten placement games.

Support heroes seem to be nerfed for leveling up...I had like 10k+ healing with Lucio in my first win and barely had a level up.

Changing heroes during the match impact how you level up/down a bunch. Just seems like in any match where I swap a player and win I barely level up. And in a loss its a huge huge down level. Again just my experience.

Medals matter...the more golds you get will really level you up and will prevent you from leveling down a lot during a loss.

I do think that getting things like potg and getting the five votes matters...a lot.

Communication and checking ego at the door are the two most important factors in competitive. Seems like common sense but very few teams talk it out. I still need to buy a mic...

I don't have to tell this group but man do not rage quit. It's an automatic level down plus you risk being banned from competitive mode for the season. I genuinely felt so bad for the opposing team when everyone left but one player...we all voted for him/her at the end for sticking it out.

 

I was typing the above as you posted. The first night had a lot of new players around level 20-30, many of which won't keep on playing. Ptr definitely had stronger players but that's the case on both sides of the coin. I had one teammate flip out on me for suggesting improvements...he even said like "most of us are new and won't keep playing". So waiting to join competitive mode isn't the worst idea.

In twelve games I haven't had a sudden death. For a tie, both teams had a chance to grab the point based on the clock. Sudden death was horrible but this solution adds more time in resolving a tie.

 

Hm that's interesting. I'll do my best to wait a week before starting up maybe. Its interesting that they penalize you for switching characters mid-match. I feel like one of the whole premises of the game is the fluidity of strategy and if something isn't working then fix it.

 

Is there more of a cooldown between games? I always feel like it jumps into the next one too soon and I don't have enough time to exit.

 

After your game ends you are sent back to the home screen and click play and competitive mode again so you can go at your own pace. It's not automatic.

 

Okay idk how to really word this. So I got Overwatch a few days ago. Really like the game, I'm having a lot of fun with it. But the game itself just feels too easy. I've probably lost 2 quickplay matches and I've been playing A LOT. Wish I had more of a challenge...

 

Completely agree and I could be wrong since this is purely anecdotal. My guess is that the ranking algorithm looks at your impact on the game on a per character basis instead of your net impact. What I know for certain is that before the game even starts, based on your ranking, teammates, opponents, and specific map there's a calculated expected impact you should have on the match... How much you level up or down is dependent on how much you exceed (or don't) that expected amount. That's why I might not be seeing much when I win with a support character...if I'm only getting the healing gold medal well that's too be expected... throw in a silver for eliminations then that impact is a lot more.

 

Give it time. You will hit days where you'll question why you bought this insufferable game.

I've never lost a game of Overwatch. True story. Too easy, brahs.

 

Yeah... And torbjorn isn't annoying on consoles

 

I actually just have six consoles set up in my house and play Torbjorn on all of them.

 

I knew it, there's no way any six human beings on the same team could morally pick six torbjorns without dying from guilt.
